Weekly Update
May 2, 2021
Hello Loudoun Valley Senior Families,
As you round out the final quarter of your high school career we want to let you know how proud we are of each of you. The Class of 2021 is a resilient, gracious, classy, and highly talented group of young adults. Through this difficult pandemic the Class of 2021 has led our school in continuous learning while holding onto our core values of being a community of care.
So now we look forward to your graduation. Graduation will be held on Saturday, June 12th at 9am in Leonard stadium on the LVHS campus - rain or shine. This is a change from previous years. If extreme/dangerous weather conditions occur, we will stay with Saturday, and will notify you early Saturday morning of a time change. Regardless of the potential for the time to change due to severe weather, the ceremony will take place outdoors in Leonard stadium.
Seniors will receive five (5) guest tickets for graduation this year. These tickets will be given to seniors after graduation practice on June 4th. Health mitigation measures and protocols will be in place for both graduation practice and the graduation ceremony itself. We will provide more specific information about those health mitigation measures at a later date.
Families/guests will be expected to sit together in their family/graduate pod and all families/guests are required to wear masks. Graduates will be seated together with their peers in the graduating class and appropriately distanced and wearing masks at all times. Limited seating for family members with physical and/or health concerns will be available in the air-conditioned auditorium to watch the event in real time via live-streaming. In addition, the live-stream link will be available for distribution to family and friends during the days leading up to graduation.
The last required school day for seniors is June 4th, unless we have to delay Senior Day due to inclement weather. This is a required in-person day for all seniors. If there is inclement weather on June 4th, we will move seniors’ last day and mandatory in-person graduation practice to June 7th. All seniors are required to attend school on the last day. Seniors who have work obligations should communicate with employers now that 1-3:30pm on June 4th (or June 7th if delayed) are required school hours for all seniors who are expecting to graduate in-person on June 12th.
A web page has been created for the Class of 2021. You will find this webpage under the ‘About’ section on the main LVHS website. The web page is titled ‘Class of 2021.’ We will post graduation information on that webpage. The Class of 2021 web page is a fluid site, so please bookmark it and check it frequently.
We are delighted that we will be able to have the full Class of 2021 participating together in graduation this year!

VIKING CAPSTONE 2021
Dear Families, Teachers, and Community Members,
We are excited that we have close to 170 students participating in our Loudoun Valley High School Capstone program this year! We couldn’t be more proud of the time, energy, and work that each of those students who have chosen to participate have put in to reaching out to their community and setting up a project, internship, or job shadowing experience that is meaningful to them!
Capstone Program
Purpose: To provide graduating seniors the opportunity to pursue an internship or community service project of their development in order to gain a broader more well-rounded view of their community, the workforce, and possibilities of future careers.
Information: The 2021 Capstone program runs from May 18th to June 3rd.
On May 17th there will be a Capstone Kick Off Event for seniors participating in Capstone. We encourage all seniors participating in Capstone to drop by the Loudoun Valley Stadium for a lap around the track between 11:00am and 1:00pm, where we will host a number of Capstone Kick Off related activities.

Application: The application process has closed for new applications. We are currently working with students to process their applications and to make sure everyone is set up for the most enriching opportunity possible.
Academics: Students participating in Capstone will be excused from their classes from May 18th to June 3rd to pursue their Capstone experience as long as they are in good academic standing. If a student has not met the academic expectation of a particular class, they will be required to attend that class throughout their Capstone experience and adjust their schedule accordingly.
Contact: Please reach out to Michael Skvarch with any questions: Michael.skvarch@lcps.org
Students can also drop into our weekly Capstone office hours 3:30pm - 4:00pm on Mondays using the following link: https://g.co/meet/skvarch2021 Students/families will need a student’s school email to access the meet.

Note: Senior Capstone availability is dependent upon safety measures as defined by the VDOE. Senior Capstone Projects planned for in-person may have to be moved to a virtual format, or may not be able to be completed. Each school has the right to approve or deny student project requests and amend the specifics of what is approved for virtual participation and/or in-person.
Hello Vikings,
We wanted to share an update with you regarding prom for this year. Based on current direction from Loudoun County Public Schools, we will not be able to host prom this April in our typical off-campus venue. We are continuing to collaborate with our district-level offices to plan a senior celebration event outdoors on our campus in accordance with current health guidelines and the governor’s order. We are sorry that we will not be able to hold prom in ways that have been part of our Valley traditions in the past. We do, however, look forward to forging new pathways with this senior class moving into April, May, and June. We want to assure you that we are actively exploring options to continue recognizing and celebrating our seniors throughout the remainder of the spring. Finally, graduation is still planned to be on campus in our stadium for June 12th following health mitigation guidance set forth by VDOE and the Governor’s office.

HELPING YOUR CHILD COPE WITH ANXIETY IN THE COVID-19 ERA:
In this presentation, Dr. Jonathan Dalton, a licensed psychologist and expert on teen anxiety and anxiety-related school refusal, reviews evidence-based, but counterintuitive practical strategies that parents can use to support children and teens experiencing high levels of anxiety. He discusses the difference between anxiety and anxiety disorders during this difficult time, how to cultivate resilience, foster self-efficacy, and to support children and teens by lowering their use of avoidance as a means of self-regulation.

BILLIE JEAN KING YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD SCHOLARSHIP
The prestigious Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award is now open for nominations as part of ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian Awards.
The Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award recognizes and supports young people demonstrating how they are using the power of sport as a catalyst for change within their local school or community. This year, the Award winners will receive some incredible opportunities:
- They will receive a one-time scholarship of $10,000 to go toward their college education or a grant to the nonprofit charitable program of which they are a part of.
- They will be honored and their work celebrated during the Sports Humanitarian Awards ahead of this year’s ESPYS, joining the incredible nominees of other prestigious awards, including the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award and the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award.
- They will participate in learning development and experiential experiences, which includes once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that will help improve and further their efforts to use sport to make change in their local communities, including: mentoring, leadership coaching, engaging with senior leaders in sport, participating in sport-for-development workshops, and the chance to meet and learn from legendary athlete and social activist, Billie Jean King.
- And finally, through the Award’s alumni program, the winners will forever be part of a meaningful and powerful network of youth leaders who we believe will go on to achieve great things for their community and the world, all through the power of sports.
Given the impactful work your organization does, we would like to invite you to nominate young people (under the age of 25) that you feel confident meet the program criteria and illustrate the characteristics of this award. Nominations can be submitted here and close May 10. Please see the attached eligibility criteria for the 2021 Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award.
