Kelly Creek Elementary School

Principal's Message - June 2021

Dear Kelly Creek Elementary School Community,

This has been a school year like none other, it is hard to believe we are in June and summer vacation is in our sight. Families, students, teachers, staff, and community members have been through a lot over the past year and a half. Even during these difficult times, I believe we were able to handle ourselves with grace, flexibility, and understanding. No one wished for this school year to start out online with us moving to Hybrid in April 2021 - but we all did it and I am proud of all the hard work everyone has contributed this school year.

It is important to reiterate how blessed I am to be part of the Kelly Creek community. I have been welcomed and given the trust to lead us through this school year. I look forward to the upcoming school year and I hope it brings us some need normalcy.

I look forward to celebrating the end of the school on Wednesday, June 16th with the rest of the school community. Kindergarten and 5th-grade promotions will be in the form of a parade through our parking lot. Families are invited to drive through to take pictures, get certificates, and other little goodies to close out the school year. All students in K-5 will also be required to return their district-issued computer, charger, case, textbooks, manipulatives, and earphones. From 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, we are asking that you stop by KCES to drop off the requested materials. K & 5th-grade students will have the opportunity to drop things immediately following their promotion parades. More details of these events can be found below in this newsletter.

My final wish for this school year is that I hope everyone has a safe, healthy, and relaxing summer vacation filled with positive memories and experiences!

If you ever have any questions or concerns, I can be reached via email at maranto2@gresham.k12.or.us or via phone at 503.663.7483.

Respectfully,

Sam Maranto

Principal

Kindergarten & 5th Grade Promotion

As we begin to close out the 2020 - 2021 school year we want to ensure we celebrate our Kindergarten students for completing their first year of elementary school. Additionally, we want to give our 5th-grade students a proper send-off to middle school!

KINDERGARTEN:

For our Kindergarten students, we will be holding a parade at 9:30 am on 06/16/21. Families are encouraged to come to Kelly Creek Elementary School for a parade in the parking lot. Families will get to drive through a balloon arch, receive their promotion certificate, and other little goodies we've prepared. This is a great opportunity to take pictures with your teacher. We are asking that family members, students, and staff wear masks and stay socially distant. You can drive through anytime between 9:30 - 10:30!

5TH GRADE:

For our 5th Grade students, we will be holding a parade at 11:30 am on 06/16/21. You can drive through anytime between 11:30 - 12:30!

Both Kindergarten & 5th Grade students are encouraged to also bring their school computer and textbooks with them to this parade. After you pass through and celebrate, there will be an opportunity to then return your GBSD computer and textbooks that we have provided to you throughout the year.

2021 - 2022 School Year

We are currently planning for the 2021 - 2022 school year. In an effort to balance classrooms, parent requests for a teacher will not be accepted. I have the utmost respect for the teaching staff at Kelly Creek Elementary School. I can say with complete confidence that regardless of who your child is placed with for the 2021 - 2022 school year they will have an amazing experience.

Families will be notified in August of your child's class placement.

The next school year will be very exciting for the Gresham-Barlow School District. With additional Federal funds, we will be able to have a full-time Music & PE teacher at KCES. Additionally, we will get to keep our full-time counseling position. The district is also working on hiring support positions to help build teacher capacity with instruction.

Also, with the additional Federal funding, the Gresham-Barlow School District will be able to purchase school supplies for our KCES students. This means parents will not be required to pay a school supply fee or purchase school supplies for the 2021-2022 school year!

State Testing Update

The Gresham-Barlow School District has decided to not move forward with testing our 3-5 grade students on state testing. This decision falls in line with many school districts in Oregon.

Students at Kelly Creek Elementary School will be tested on the iReady Math & Reading Diagnostic Assessment at the end of May and beginning of June. Students will be taking the DIBEL Assessment to check fluency, reading accuracy, and comprehension.

In-District Transfer Request

In-District transfer requests are now open for the 2021 - 2022 school year. If you would like to attend a different school in GBSD or if you moved out of the KCES boundary and are still within the GBSD, you can fill out a transfer request. Transfer requests are not guaranteed, the school district will notify you of the outcome of your requests. Decisions will not be made until the summer months in order for the schools to get a better picture of the 2021-2022 enrollment.

This year transfer requests will be done electronically. Below are the links to the In-District Transform Forms:
