AT-HOME TECHNOLOGY HELP
With Distance Learning 2.0 upon us, I just wanted to point you in the direction of some of the online technology support for parents and students.
Screen Time
From one parent to another, we were struggling with how much time our children were on their iPads after school each day. Our daughters seemed to find YouTube and were more than happy to spend hours watching useless shows and programs. My husband and I were telling them to play outside, color, make crafts, play a game, make a puzzle, etc. But we were often met with whining and complaints.
So we implemented some Screen Time restrictions to remove the iPad as an option or an argument during their after school hours. At our home, we limit the amount of screen time our children have on their school and personal iPads.
Do these struggles sound familiar? If so, you can set up Screen TIme restrictions on your child's iPad. Want to limit how much time your child is on their iPad in their non-school hours? Or over winter break?
Students will not have live instruction from Wednesday, December 23 until January 3. So if you would like to decrease their screen time over break, you can use the "Screen Time" settings on the iPad to set limits for your child.
IMPORTANT: If you set-up screen time restrictions, make sure to change them before January 4th so that your child does not have issues once we return to school.

NURSE NOTES
Well, it’s that time of year again, STREP THROAT season! Here are some helpful notes about STREP and how to keep your child (and yourself!) strep free this winter!
What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection in the throat and the tonsils. The throat gets irritated and inflamed, causing a sudden, severe sore throat.
What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms of strep throat are:
*A sudden, severe sore throat.
*Pain when you swallow.
*Fever over 101F.
*Swollen tonsils and lymph nodes.
*White or yellow spots on the tonsils or on the back of a bright red throat.
*You may also have a headache and belly pain.
*Less common symptoms are a red skin rash, vomiting, not feeling hungry, and body aches.
Strep throat can be passed from person to person. When a person who has strep throat breathes, coughs, or sneezes, tiny droplets with the strep bacteria go into the air. These droplets can be breathed in by other people. If you come into contact with strep, it will take 2 to 5 days before you start to have symptoms.
How is it treated?
Doctors usually treat strep throat with antibiotics even though they may not make you well faster. Antibiotics shorten the time you are able to spread the disease to others (are contagious) and lower the risk of spreading the infection to other parts of your body.
You are contagious while you still have symptoms. Most people stop being contagious 24 hours after they start antibiotics. If you don't take antibiotics, you may be contagious for 2 to 3 weeks, even if your symptoms go away. Your child must stay out of school for 24 hours from the moment they start taking the antibiotic.
How do you prevent strep throat?
Wash your hands often when you are around people with colds or viral or bacterial illnesses!!!
Use tissues you can throw away, wash your hands often, and do not sneeze or cough on others.
Don’t drink from the same glass or use the same eating utensils – and DON’T SHARE TOOTHBRUSHES!
Keep up your body's resistance to infection with a good diet, plenty of sleep, and regular exercise. Managing stress can also strengthen your body's ability to fight off illness, such as strep throat. Stop smoking and avoid breathing others' smoke. Smoke irritates the throat tissues and may make you more susceptible to infection. Humidify your home during the dry winter months. Moisture in the air (humidity) helps keep your mucous membranes moist and more resistant to bacteria. You can use a humidifier in the bedroom while you sleep.

Greetings from the Art Department!
Greetings from the Art Department!
I hope you all are doing well! Here are just a couple reminders that will help our Jackson students be successful learning from home.
Have these materials ready for each art lesson:
· A pencil
· Something to color with
· Paints/brush
· Paper that Mr. Olson sent home
· Sharpie/Thin black marker
If you need any of these items, contact Mr. Olson and they will be provided.
Also, here is a reminder about clay projects in 4th and 5th grade:
· You can drop your clay project off in the office at Jackson to be fired and returned to on a supply pick up day.
Or...
· You can keep your clay at home, in a safe place, and bring it to school for firing when we return to in-person learning.
I hope you all had a wonderful winter break with your family and I hope to see you all soon!
Mr. Olson
Thank you for all of your support during this time!!!
Sincerely,
Mr. Olson

If your student happens to miss music class for a reason, please have them check their music activity or inbox on Seesaw for updates, activities or homework they may have missed.
Music “Goodie Bags”. All students should have received a goodie bag of resources and materials that we will use during our music class. If your child goes to another person’s house or YMCA, it would be helpful if they had their “goodie bags”. If they do not have these materials, please let us know.
Music class will be around 25-30 minutes long. Please have your student use the bathroom, eat breakfast or lunch before or after music class.
If your student is able to keep their camera “on” during the google meet, that would be very helpful. If there is a reason that this is not possible, please let us know. We understand there will be situations that come up, but because this class involves movement, singing, and participation, it is helpful to be able to see students. As always, please communicate with us if we can help with this or there is a problem. We are in this together!
Our hope is that music can be a healthy outlet for students during this difficult time! Take care and as always, please let us know how we can help make music a positive experience for your student!

Greetings from the Learning Commons!
Media Classes
In media we just finished up our first round of lessons on digital citizenship. A digital citizen is anyone who uses technology to learn, share, and create. We are all digital citizens, but it is important to remember that we still need to show Jackson Pride when we are using technology. That means we are being respectful, responsible, positive, and safe online. We also discussed the importance of being balanced in our media choices. That means asking What? When? and How much? when we are using devices, and making sure we have a balance between online and offline activities throughout our day.
Book Checkout for Distance Learning
Students are still able to check out books from our school library during distance learning. To do so, follow these steps:
Go to: https://shakopee.libguides.com/bookpickup
- Search for books in your school's library catalog.
- Fill out the book request form for the books you would like to check out (up to 3 books at a time).
- If the book is available, you will be notified by email and the book will be checked out to your account and held in the main office for you for 3 days. If the book is not picked up in 3 days, the book will be checked in and returned to the library shelves.
- Books have a 21-day checkout period, but you can renew them by calling or emailing Mrs. Arvin or Mrs. Menden.
- Books can be returned to the main office. PLEASE return previous books checked out!

PTO NEWS
Jackson Jottings 2021
Happy new year!!! Let’s hope 2021 is a little less stressful and more normal! We do not have too much to update you on. Thank you for your overwhelming response to our Blizzard of Wishes campaign. Thanks to those that were able to participate, our wonderful teachers got a lot of the supplies they were wishing for for their rooms!
January is pretty quiet for us. We usually have our Jackson dance but we will be unable to have that this year.
We are scheduled for a meeting on 2/16/21 at 6:30. This is a grant meeting. Location will be determined as we get closer to the date so we can figure out what format of a meeting is safest for everyone.
Lastly, we are still looking for volunteers to coordinate two easy PTO projects, our box tops for education and our school toolbox program. It is a great way to get to know some other parents from your student’s school and to get involved with our amazing staff. If you are interested or have any questions, please let me know at jacksonPTO28@gmail.com. Have a wonderful month!!
