Friar Laurence
A person should not meddle or interfere with fate
In Romeo and Juliet the character Friar Laurence tried to work very sneaky and attempted to alter things behind the scenes when he should not have. As a result of the this, his plan failed and led to bigger problems; both Romeo and Juliet's death.
Act 2 Scene 3
To begin with, Friar Laurence is talking to Romeo about marrying him and Juliet and says, "But come, young waverer, come go with me. In one respect i'll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love." (p. 1031 line 97-100). This shows where Friar Laurence agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet in hopes that the marriage will turn the negativeness between the families into something positive.
Act 3 Scene 3
Next in the story, Romeo kills Tybalt, and is punished with a prison sentence, and as a result of Romeo going to prison, Juliet goes to visit him and she has an encounter with Paris, who thinks him and Juliet are marrying. Here is a quote in which Friar Laurence is talking to Romeo about his punishment from the Prince: "Thy fault our law calls death; but the kind prince, taking thy part, hath rushed aside the law, and turned that black word death to banishment. This is dear mercy, and thou seest it not." (p. 1056 line 28-31).
Act 4 Scene 5
In this part of the story, the nurse finds Juliet's dead body and yells for help: "She's dead, deceased; she's dead! Alack the day!" (p. 1082 line 28). This is a result of Juliet trying to get out of marrying Paris. She takes a potion to out herself into a deathlike comma for a few days.
Act 5 Scene 3
The story starts to come to an end when Romeo finds Juliet 'dead' and drinks poison to die next to Juliet, the love of his life. The story states, "Here's to my love [drinks]. Thus with a kiss I die. [Falls]." (p. 1096 line 122-123).Just shortly after, Juliet awakens from her deep sleep, to find Romeo's dead body right beside her. She is saddened and therefor picks up Romeos dagger and says "This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die [stabs herself and falls.]" (p. 1098 line 183).
