Safety Update
- Help us stamp out social media rumors: Given how quickly information spreads in the age of social media, it’s completely understandable when students, parents, and families become concerned when they hear about potential threats to school safety on social media. We take every potential threat seriously. Whenever we learn of a potential threat, our school and GUHSD leadership work in collaboration with our law enforcement partners to investigate and assess it. To aid us in this effort, if you hear of a potential safety issue on our campus, we encourage you to call the school office before deciding to drive to campus. While understandable and well-intended, a flurry of non-students arriving to campus can unintentionally contribute to panic and alarm, thereby making it more challenging for us to investigate the threat, establish calm, and keep everyone safe. Of course, we always encourage all members of our school community to make our school office (619-593-5300) or our District office (619-644-8000) aware of any alarming social media posts so that we can look into them and respond appropriately.
- Unfortunately, vaping devices come in all shapes and sizes: School safety includes student health and well-being. “Vaping” – smoking through the use of e-cigarettes – is a frustratingly persistent issue on our campus. People are often surprised as to the various shapes and sizes of vaping devices. Oftentimes it appears they were intentionally built to conceal their actual function. Here are a few examples that have been recently confiscated, as they’re never allowed on our campus. It’s always helpful for students to be reminded about the dangers of vaping, and we encourage you to do so. There are resources and programs available to help teens quit. Please also feel free to speak with your student’s counselor for more information.
