Principal's Message
Happy New Year once again!
Although it was a short week at Potter Road, it was full of energy and enthusiasm as I walked through the building. Specifically, some of our students had fun choosing ONE WORD to help define who they want to strive to be in the new year. Let me back up a bit. I challenge our staff each year to come up with their own ONE WORD each year to help guide them in the new year. Some staff throughout Potter took this to heart and started asking students to choose their own ONE WORD to support their growth this year. Students in several classes eagerly shared their words with me this past week and shared their rationale for choosing the word.
While he may not have created the idea, motivational speaker and author Jon Gordon has helped popularize the idea. See his writing and video below.
A great way to get started is Jon Gordon's One Word for Kids book. Kids read this with parents and caregivers and come up with their ONE WORD!
While you're at it, why don't you choose your ONE WORD?
As always, feel free to reach out via email with any questions.
Thanks
Larry
The Power of One Word-Jon Gordon
Discover the Power of One Word
9 out of 10 people will fail with their resolutions.
50% of resolution makers will fail by the end of January.
But One Word sticks!
One word gives you meaning and mission, passion and purpose. One word helps you focus on what matters most.
That's why 10 years I ago I stopped making New Year's resolutions and started picking One Word for the upcoming year. No resolutions, no goals... just One Word that helps me be my best and create a great year.
My friends Dan Britton and Jimmy Page have been doing this for over 20 years. They told me how every New Year's Eve they gathered with their children and each came up with a word. Then they made paintings of their words that hung in their houses to remind them to live their word for the year.
I was inspired and started doing it with my family and shared it with everyone. One Word has impacted sports teams, businesses, hospitals, families, schools, and children.
One word is simple, powerful and it makes a difference.
My words over the years have been: PURPOSE, SURRENDER, SERVE, PRAY, RISE, FORGIVE, STILL, CONNECTED, EXPAND, HEART and ABIDE.
Each word has shaped and molded me into the person I am today and looking back the right word chose me at the right time. I say choose me because I never chose a word randomly. I reflected and went through a process and each year the word came to me and I knew it was the right one. When you choose one word for the year it will become a chapter in your book of life.
