Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
October 29th-November 2nd
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will wrap up our weather unit. The unit test will be Tuesday the 30th. Students are also finalizing their weather map projects and we are recording them in front of the green screen this week. Students were given a review choice board over weather that is due on Wednesday. They have had 3-4 days to work on this in class while we have been finishing up weather maps. On Wednesday we will start our next SOCIAL STUDIES unit on European explorers and the reasons they explored.
- Mrs. Thurston's and Ms. Uhlenhake's ELA/Math: In math this week, we will begin multiplication using the Area method. This method is different compared to the method you and I learned when we were in school. Please look in your child’s math notebook for assistance. And as always, feel free to email me if you have any questions! We will be doing 2x1, 3x1, 4x1 and 2x2 multiplication. As Halloween approaches on Wednesday, we will be finishing our realistic spooky stories. Wednesday, we will share them with others in class. In reading, we will practice using context clues to figure out unknown words/phrases in our stories.
- Ms. Harris' GT ELA/Math: In math this week we will be working on multiplying multi digit numbers. Students will start with 4x1 digit and build to 2x2 digits. They will be learning the standard algorithm that most adults use, as well as the area model which helps them multiply using place value. Unless otherwise stated, students can use the method that they feel most comfortable using. In reading we will be finishing our novel, "The Westing Game." Students must have read the whole novel and be ready to discuss the final chapters by Monday 5th. We will also discuss theme and how to formulate a theme statement from the clues in a story. Spelling will be TWO WEEKS this time because of Election day and the field trip. Words will be given this week but we won't test until the week of the 12th. Students will need to complete 5 homework activities instead of the normal 3. We will also publish our spooky stories this week. They are due on Wednesday and then we will share them around a "campfire" together. :)
Book Character Day is Wednesday
On Wednesday, students are welcome to wear the costume of their favorite book character. We would like to emphasize that rather than being an opportunity for students to wear whatever costumes they are wearing for Halloween, that they take the time to celebrate one of their favorite Book Characters.
Scarecrow Crawl Contest
The Food Service Dept. has a scarecrow in the Town of Fort Mill Scarecrow Crawl Contest. Ms. Stacy in the cafeteria is asking that everyone that has a Facebook Page to go to the Town of Fort Mill Facebook Page and vote like Lola The Lunch Lady #18 ask all your family and friends to help too. This is a picture of Lola.
JA in a Day is Friday
