Principal's Message
Dear St. Maria Goretti Catholic School Families,
It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving Break is right around the corner. We have a lot to be thankful for this year. The last day for the Thanksgiving food drive is Monday. If you haven't donated to this drive, please see the flyer below. There will NOT be a Trojan Times on November 21st. We will resume the newsletter on November 28th.
Over the Thanksgiving break, our new water bottle filling station will be installed in the junior high hallway for all to use. Please be sure to send your child with a water bottle each day.
An SMGCS Open House is planned for Monday, November 15, 2021. We will be welcoming visitors to campus from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM and again from 4:00 PM-5:30 PM. If you know of anyone looking for a Catholic School Family, please invite them to attend.
Thursday, November 18, 2021, Butter Braids will be ready for pickup in the SMG Center. Students may be picked up from the gym (rainy day carline procedures) to allow families to stop by and pick up their orders. Thanks to all who participated, we exceeded our $1200 goal. We will be able to buy a new TV and cart to use throughout the school.
On Friday, students will play Turkey BINGO for the chance to win a frozen turkey. All funds raised will go to the I Give Catholic Campaign. The official date for this campaign is November 30th. Similar to North Texas Giving Day, I Give Catholic raises money specifically for Catholic schools and parishes around the nation. We plan on using funds from this fundraiser to replace the outdated carpet in the school. Turkey Bingo is a chance for our students to participate in the fundraising process. If you haven't purchased your Bingo card, please do so this week.
As you heard at the Home and School Meeting Tuesday, we are preparing for the Christmas season. Be on the lookout for a Sign Up Genius to donate treats for St. Nicholas Day and to decorate the hallways for Christmas. Please see the flyer below and consider becoming a cultural liaison to help us prepare for Christmas Around the World.
Finally, we are preparing for our Accreditation and the rewriting of our Strategic Plan. We need your help gathering data to assist in this process. Students will be completing a student survey in computer classes this week. We would also like to hear from our parents. Please use the following link to complete the parent survey. All parents who complete this survey will earn a spirit hour for their time. https://smgcs.questionpro.com/
Please keep our priests in your prayers.
St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!
Blessings,
Amy Utendorf, M.Ed.

Dear Parents,
At Christmas, Catholics all over the world celebrate and honor the birth of Jesus Christ. Traditional Christmas decorations often can be admired and festive celebrations can be observed in most countries, even in many of the countries where Christianity is not the Religion of the majority of people.
The Christmas season starts at different times in various countries. Advent is the beginning of the religious season as we prepare for the “coming” of the Christ Child. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and is often marked by an Advent wreath and 5 candles anticipating Christ’s birth.
In some places, festivities begin on December 6th, St. Nicholas day. In other places, not until the first star is spotted on Christmas Eve. Celebrations may last until January 1st, New Year’s, or continue for 12 days until January 6th, Three Kings’ Day or the Epiphany.
SMGCS would like to take your child on a trip around the world to discover customs, traditions, and the Catholic celebration of Christmas in other countries. However, in order to do so we need your HELP. We know our families are a great source of information and we would love to have you share your heritage, culture, customs and traditions when it comes to celebrating a Catholic Christmas.
If you would be interested in being a cultural liaison please contact Laura Perez at development@smgschool.org.
This year we will be focusing on 9 countries:
- Sweden
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Mexico
- Nigeria
- Russia
- Sweden
- United Kingdom
- Vietnam
Let’s create some lasting memories for everyone involved and learn a few things as we go!

Home & School Meeting
Thanks to all who attended Tuesday's Home & School Meeting. The Ballet Folklorico Club sold taco plates prior to the meeting as a fundraiser. The first grade closed the meeting with a beautiful song coordinated by Music Teacher, Mrs. Richards.

Veteran's Day
Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL who have served, living or deceased, but particular the living veterans among us.
SMGCS invited our families to celebrate Veteran's Day with us Thursday. We gathered in the Family Life Center to watch a video honoring our veterans and to enjoy students perform patriotic songs and poems. Veterans were presented with student created thank you cards, bookmarks and prayer cards to show our appreciation. We are thankful for all of our Veterans. A big thank you to Mrs. Richards for the beautiful program.
