February Update
Army Trail Elementary School
5 Essentials Survey
Starting February 1, students, teachers, and parents across Illinois will have the opportunity to participate in the statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to give parents, teachers, and students the opportunity to share thoughts, worries, and suggestions regarding the current effectiveness of your student's school.
The survey revolves around five key indicators that are related to student success, including:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative teachers
- Involved families
- Supportive environments
- Ambitious instruction
The survey takes roughly 10-20 minutes to complete and will be open through February 28, 2022. This is a great opportunity for parents to give feedback regarding the conditions of your students' school and helps to guide our improvement efforts.
To take this survey, please click on the link below and select the "Parent Survey" to begin. We hope to receive your assistance with our ongoing mission to improve the quality of learning for our students.

Erin's Law
At Addison School District #4, we believe it is important to focus on the well-being of all students. On January 24, 2013, Gov. Pat Quinn signed a new law extending sexual abuse education in Illinois schools. Like previous years, the Addison School District curriculum will include Erin’s Law, a state-mandated, age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education program for all students in grades preschool through 12th. The law also requires any adult who works in a school-related capacity to take part in training classes that cover sexual abuse and how to recognize warning signs.
Each PreK-5th grade class at Army Trail will receive a 60-minute presentation in between the weeks of March 1-30th.
The following topics will be covered:
- Basic Body safety/ awareness
- Setting personal boundaries
- Seeking help from friends and adults we trust
To get more information on Erin’s Law, visit the website at http://www.erinslawillinois.org/.
If you do not wish your son or daughter to participate in the Erin’s Law curriculum, or you have any questions or concerns please contact Jamie Hatfield, School Social Worker, at 630-458-2461 or jhatfield@asd4.org by Monday, February 28th, 2022. It is important to note; if we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in this curriculum.
Allergy & Food Policy
We have seen an increase in students bringing treats for their birthdays. Please do not your bring food items to school to share with other students. If they would like to celebrate you are welcome to share non-food items. I have included the Parent-Student handbook policy below. While this might be unpopular, it is for the safety of all students. Below is a link to the ASD4 Parent/Student Handbook with specific details.
Parent Teacher Association
Army Trail is looking for parents and families member to volunteer and help the PTA. The PTA is vital to supporting students through family-oriented activities, fundraising, and other unique opportunities. Please consider helping out! Please reach out to Yolitzin Martinez yolitzin22@gmail.com for additional information.
Electronics
Electronics such as gaming devices, VR sets, personal tablets, and other electronic devices are not allowed at school. Bringing these devices creates unnecessary opportunities for them to get damaged or lost. Cell phones are allowed at school. However, phones must be turned off and put away during the school day.
Winter Weather
Student Drop-off and Pick-up
As the winter has gotten worse, we have seen an increase in unsafe driving and parking for pick-up and drop-off. Army Trail has specific procedures in place to ensure that students, staff, and property all stay safe. We are asking that all parents follow the procedures outlined below (please click the buttons below for additional details). Please follow these additional guidelines.
- Only drop-off and pick-up students in the designated areas
- Please use the crosswalks
- Follow the correct direction of travel in the parking lot
Second Step: Skills for Learning
In February, our schoolwide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
- Stop—Use your signal
- Name your feeling
- Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You’ll be receiving Home Links that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down. We hope the Home Links will give you tools to use together when your child is upset.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to calm down at home.

Vaccine Card Submission
Attention ASD4 families,
Addison School District 4 has started a new email account exclusively for parents: healthinfo@asd4.org
This email address was created to allow families to share their student’s vaccination cards with the district. If your student has received their COVID-19 vaccination, you can submit a copy of their vaccination card to this email address. This account will be monitored by our district nurse, and she will be sharing your child’s information with their correct school health aide. We encourage you to submit your child’s vaccination card to this email address, as students who do not have any proof of vaccination will be required to follow the isolation and quarantine rules for unvaccinated students. When submitting your child’s vaccination card, please be sure to include the following in your email:
- Child’s full name
- Grade
- School name
Please reach out to your school’s principal with any questions you may have.
Army Trail exists to EMPOWER, IMPACT, EDUCATE, and INSPIRE others.
