PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
As you know we added a new program to our building this year. The ELC (Emotional Learning Center) was designed to help students transition from other special education programs back into general education classrooms. At this time the students in this classroom are in need of an additional classroom space. To help support the needs of the students, we have attempted to create additional ‘spaces’ for them within the building, but these spaces have not been sufficient. I also know that using these spaces have caused a bit of a disruption to other students in the building.
As the principal, I want all of our students to feel safe and to have a learning environment in which they can be successful. I have been working with a team of district-level staff to help me explore ways to make this happen. My goal is to lessen the disruption in the building and to help our ELC students feel more connected to our Nancy Ryles community. To help with this effort, we will be moving a few classrooms. On Friday, when students are home, we will be making these changes. Our hope is that these changes will both support the work of our K-5 students and our ELC program.
Our ELC program needs two locations, so they will be moving out into the portable classrooms. This means our third grade team of Olson and Young will move back into the building. They will be located in the fourth grade pod. Students in Olson and Young will want to meet their teachers in the cafeteria at 8:25 am on Monday. Teachers will escort students to their new location.
Our ESL program will be located downstairs in our Technology Lab and our technology instruction will take place in our library. Our Technology and Library schedule are on opposite days. To allow our two third grade classes to remain together, Mr. Scribner will be moving down the hallway and will be in the current ELC classroom location. Mr. Scribner’s students will still have access to the fourth grade pod area. They will also have their own bathroom, which is located in the classroom.
On Monday, we will have additional teaching staff here to help both students and teachers through the transition. While I do not expect that all of the classrooms will be completely set up, teachers will have a teaching space and students will be learning. I understand that this is a disruption, but my hope is that it is a temporary one and these moves will help all of our students. We still have plenty of school year left.
I want to thank you for supporting our ELC program. I have heard from many of you that you understand our commitment to these children. I also want to thank you for trusting us with the safety and security of your child each day.
Finally, thank you for attending conferences this week. We really do appreciate the opportunity to connect with each and every one of you. If you were unable to meet with your child’s teacher this week, please send them an email, so that you can find a time to connect.
Thank you for supporting our school. Enjoy your weekend.

NRCO NEWS
Box Tops: Bring those Box Tops in to your child's teacher by October 26. Thank you!!!
Clothes Closet: Our community needs parents, family and friends to staff the Clothes Closet on November 9. Please check the available shifts under www.MyVolunteerPage.com. It's a great way to give back and help other families who could really use it. We have volunteers for our first shift but still have 2 shifts without anyone signed up. We need volunteers to help.
Art Lit: Dutch post-impressionist painter, Vincent Van Gogh is our October artist. In only 10 years he produced 1,700 works of art, some of which were the most powerful influences on modern art. His paintings are known for his use of color, line, and textures utilizing a technique known as Impasto. Your children learned to identify the textures in his paintings as they created their own, so please ask them about it. PLEASE HELP! We are still looking for volunteers for the following classes: Anderson, Hollywood, Ellington, Burnett, and Minnieweather. Cory Lines (gogocory@yahoo.com) can help you get started. NOTE: Our next artist training is November 2 at 9am or 7pm sessions available. Thank you!
eScrip - Recycling: We have some exciting news. We are now part of the nationwide eScrip Recycling Program! What does this mean? We don't have to sell anything, the program is FREE, and we get paid to recycle empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges. We make more money if the items are on the price list, but even if they're not they will be recycled responsibly. The center is ISO 14001 certified. Send the times with your student and have them drop off the cartridges with their teacher or in the office. Once our boxes are full, we'll send them in, get paid, and start filling our boxes again. Together we can turn this waste into CASH for our school. This program will only succeed with your support and that of our local community. Thank you for your help in recycling!
eScrip - Fred Meyer: Please refer to the flyer below for information about how shopping at Fred Meyer can benefit the NRCO.
Passport: It's not too late to signup. The form was included with the maps that went home with students last week. Please return it to school by Monday, 10/24, or email your student's information to Benedict (bbalcher@sbcglobal.net). Testing is Wednesday, 10/26. Don't miss out on this amazing geography program!
STATE REPORT CARDS
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. Given the recent passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the expiration of Oregon's ESEA flexibility waiver on August 1, 2016, the State of Oregon will not assign an overall rating to schools for the 2015-16 school year. Our school ratings in the areas of student achievement and student growth on state assessments and graduation rates are available in our Report Card Rating Detail Sheet at the link above.
5th GRADE LEARNING OPTIONS FOR 2017-2018

Current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 24, 2016. The link below will take you to the Learning Options page where you can apply and see the Options Open House Information.
