Congratulations to our 8B Volleyball Team as they are district runners' up! I hope you were able to join us last night for our Parent U session on technology. It was very informative and insightful. Make plans to attend the next Parent U session. Tonight is the Orchestra Fall Concert. You don’t want to miss it! Thank you for attending our Spirit night at Chipotle last night. Jaguars are working hard and having fun as they learn so please continue to support student events.

Bullying Prevention Month-It is important to teach kindness to one another. Speak to your student about what bullying is and what bullying is not. Down Syndrome Awareness Month- Down Syndrome Awareness Month (DSAM) is a chance to spread awareness, advocacy and inclusion throughout the community. During the month of October, we celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and make people aware of their abilities and accomplishments. The colors representing support are blue and yellow. Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Month- October has been a time to highlight the vital role of substance abuse prevention in both individual and community health has, to remember those who have lost their lives to substance abuse, to acknowledge those in recovery, as well as children, parents, family, and friends supporting them. October is also set aside to educate communities, individuals, couples and families about Family Advocacy Program services and other community resources that can help prevent, raise awareness of community responsibility and resources for addressing domestic violence and abuse. Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. SHP’s sole purpose is to educate and empower parents, schools and community organizations on how to prevent gun violence BEFORE it happens by providing mental health & wellness early-identification and intervention programs, gun safety storage practices and advocating for sensible state and federal violence prevention policy. For more information about Sandy Hook Promise and our other school and community-based prevention programs and training, please visit www.sandyhookpromise.org. Make the Promise and together we can protect children from preventable gun violence.

Student Spotlight
Ella Chen is currently a 7th grader at SMS and she is such a hardworking and kind person. She demonstrates many of the qualities of a profile of a graduate on a daily basis. Ella is always striving to improve and loves a challenge! This year, Ella stepped out of her comfort zone and tried out for the Kickstart Beginner demo team. She is now one of the 23 team members and is extremely dedicated to the team. She is driven to grow and accomplish her goals and her teammates respect her for her commitment and enthusiasm as she works with others.

Semester Exams Middle School Courses Semester Exams will not be given at the end of the semester in middle school courses. Instead, an additional major grade for a total of (4) major grades will be added in the last grading period of the course. o In semester courses, the second grading period will include the additional major grade. o In full year courses, the fourth grading period will include the additional major grade. The additional major grade shall align to TEKS and include a rubric or checklist where a project or performance assessment is selected. Example of types of assessment that may be used are:
• Authentic, project-based, collaborative learning experience,
• Performance based assessment, and/or
• Comprehensive examination of the course
Semester Exams High School Credit Courses taken in Middle School will have exams.
All high school credit courses taken in middle school will assess students using a cumulative semester exam at the end of the first and second semester. Semester exams shall align to the curriculum, and may include the use of multiple modalities to measure student proficiency. Semester exams shall be kept on file by the Department Head in each content area for a period of (1) year.

We have BIG plans for this year including exciting new programs and learning opportunities for you and your child to help you navigate through their middle school years. No Place for Hate
Mrs. McCune is looking for students/parents to serve on this years No Place for Hate committee. The committee will meet once a month to help plan 3 school wide activities to support acceptance by combating bias, bullying and hatred, and creating and maintaining a positive climate here at SMS. If you or your child is interested in being on the committee, please have them sign up in the student center or tell their grade level counselor at lunch.

PAWS FOR CAUSE - JAG CASH DRIVE
Support the PTO by donating to our Annual Cash Drive. Our Goal this year is $25,000. This is the only cash drive for the entire year. With the funds raised, we have plans to build a shade for the bleachers, bring in new technology for our students, fulfill our Teacher Wish Lists, support the fine Arts department and many more. If every Household donates just $10 we will exceed our goal. Please fill out the attached form and drop it off at the front office. We accept cash/check.
