Remote Learning Plan Parent Resource - Spring - 2021

Harrison School District 36 will begin a full day of in-person instruction for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Parents are encouraged to access the full Return to Learn Plan on the website at www.hsd36.org or ask their child’s teacher as questions arise. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) have released guidance to assist schools as they transition to in-person instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will remote learning remain an option for students after the return to in-person instruction date?

  • In-person learning is strongly encouraged unless immuno-compromised members live in your house.

  • Remote learning may be chosen on a trimester basis.

  • In-person students may switch to remote learning on a case by case basis. However, remote learning students may not switch to in-person.


Can my child still take the bus to and from school?

  • The bus will be available to transport students to and from school during in-person instruction.

  • Parents are encouraged to drive their child each day if possible to maintain social distancing on our buses. The majority of the school’s quarantine cases occurred because of the bus. Driving could help minimize our quarantine numbers.

  • Students will be required to wear a mask on the bus at all times.

  • Students who ride the bus may switch to be driven by parents anytime during the trimester. However, students driven may not switch to riding the bus.


Will my child have a mask break during the day?

  • Teachers may schedule a mask break into their daily schedule.

  • Students will have a mask break while eating lunch and enjoying recess.


Where will the students eat lunch?

  • Students will eat lunch in their classroom.

  • School lunches will be delivered to the classroom each day, but students may bring lunch from home.

  • There will be a supervisor in each classroom, who will then take the class outside for a brief recess/mask break.


What if my child develops COVID Symptoms?

  • It is VERY important that you report any symptom(s) your child may be experiencing to the Health Office.

  • Harrison School will follow the guidance provided by the CDC and Illinois Department of Public Health.


Does my child need a water bottle everyday?

  • Please label your child’s water bottle with their first and last name.

  • Students will be allowed to fill their water bottle at the water bottle filling station.

  • Regular drinking fountains have been turned off.


What are the cleaning procedures in the building?

  • Classrooms will be sanitized after lunch, while the students are outside for recess.

  • We will continue to have an additional staff member work throughout the day sanitizing high-touch areas.

  • Bathrooms will be cleaned throughout the day.



How will social distancing be observed in the school?

  • Students will continue to use the dots in the hallways for social distancing.

  • Classrooms will be arranged with desks spaced apart by six feet, whenever possible.

  • Students will be assigned a designated area during recess. Activities may include sidewalk chalk, jump rope or walking. Each student will be given their own playground supplies. Contact games such as, tag, soccer will not be allowed.

  • During PE, whether inside or outside, students will be socially distanced using floor markings, hula hoops or spray paint markings on the grass.


Will my child travel to Art, Music, Library and PE?

  • Students will remain in their classroom for Art, Music and Library.

  • PE will be held outdoors as much as possible, weather permitting. If classes are unable to go outside, classes will be held in the Multipurpose Room or Welke Gym.


If my child misses the bus, can he/she participate remotely?

  • Students may only participate in remote learning, if they are absent due to COVID related symptoms.

  • You may drive your child to school. Please park in the visitor parking and walk your child into the building.


What are the school day hours?

  • PreK hours are 9:00am to 11:30am - 1:00pm to 3:30pm

  • K-5th hours are 9:00am to 3:30pm

  • 6th-8th hours are 8:00am to 2:30pm


How do I contact my child’s teacher?

  • Teachers will respond to email within 24 hours

  • Each teacher will have “Office Hours” which will be part of the daily schedule

    • K-5 Office Hours are 8:10am to 9:00am

    • 6th-8th Office Hours are 2:30pm to 3:15pm


Will Harrison School provide breakfast and lunch for my child?

  • Breakfast and lunch is free for all students.

  • Parents of remote students must order meals and pick them up daily.

  • Meal pick up time is 11:00am-1:00pm.

  • Students will eat lunch in their classroom.

  • Students will bring breakfast home for the next day.


What do I do if I have concerns about my child’s Social-Emotional well being?

  • If you have concerns in this area, please reach out to the school social worker.

  • You may reach out to your child’s teacher who will direct your concern to the appropriate person.



Will students be able to participate in extracurricular activities?

  • After school in-person clubs and activities have also been postponed until we receive further guidance from ISBE and IDPH.

  • It is our intention to offer all athletics, and we are working on creating a modified schedule so students may participate. The Mid-Northern Athletic Conference is hoping to participate in boys’ and girls’ track this year but is awaiting further guidance from ISBE and IESA. Track season will be mid-March through April. More information will be shared with 6th-8th grade students in March.
