Task
S4L1. Students will describe the roles of organisms and the flow of energy within an ecosystem.
a. Identify the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers in a community.
b. Demonstrate the flow of energy through a food web/food chain beginning with sunlight and including producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Process
Step 1: Watch the Flocabulary video about food chains at the following website: https://www.flocabulary.com/food-chains/
Step 2: Think/Pair/Share about the Flocabulary video.
Step 3: In your science composition notebook, answer the fill in the blank questions on the Flocabulary video.
Step 4: Watch the Brain Pop Video about ecosystems at the following website: https://www.brainpop.com/science/ecologyandbehavior/ecosystems/preview.weml
Step 5: Copy the graphic organizer into your science composition journal. Then, make notes about each type of consumer that makes them different from each other.
Herbivores
Carnivores
Omnivores
Step 6: Complete your choice of 3 quizzes on the following website: http://a-z-animals.com/quiz/. Screen shot your results pages and print them out.
Step 7: Make a diagram of a food chain and food web. Including Sunlight and Decomposers, randomly select 10 animals from the list provided at the following website: http://a-z-animals.com/animals/. Conclusion
Conclusion
You have learned about producers, consumers, and decomposers. You should now be able to categorize consumers as herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Finally, you have demonstrated an understanding of the flow of energy through a food chain and food web.
