September AVID News
Puterbaugh Middle School
AVID has started off with a bang in September!!!
School has started off fast and furious. In AVID we have done Fun Fridays, tutorial reference forms, binder checks, and weekly grade checks.
Reading is fun!!
Avid student's went to Will Roger's to read to the elementary school kids. This not only excited the kids, but also showed the importance of literacy.
Reading to young children helps promote communication skills, logical thinking, enhanced concentration and discipline, and knowledge that reading is fun!
AVID Tutorial
Avid students working in Mrs. Grillot's classroom on tutorial request forms.
- During tutorials, the AVID elective class is divided into several tutorial groups. Under the direction and supervision of the AVID elective teacher, an AVID-trained tutor facilitates the discussion and work at each group.
What is the purpose of tutorials?
- Create deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content class
- Develop skills necessary to become self-directed learners.
- It's not just homework help.
Socratic Seminar
- 8th grade class participating in a socratic seminar.
- The goal of a Socratic seminar is for students to help one another understand the ideas, issues, and values reflected in a specific text.
- Students are responsible for facilitating a discussion around ideas in the text rather than asserting opinions. Through a process of listening, making meaning, and finding common ground students work toward shared understanding rather than trying to prove a particular argument.
- A Socratic seminar is not used for the purpose of debate, persuasion, or personal reflection, as the focus is on developing shared meaning of a text.
