Note from Mrs. Taylor!
Last week, I shared with you the 3 Goals for Life:
- I can take good care of myself, even if I am mad or have an overwhelming feeling.
- I can be okay, even when others are not okay.
- I can be productive and follow directions, even if I don’t want to.
This week, I would like to share more about each goal, starting with Goal #1!
BIST Tip: Goals for Life #1
I can take good care of myself, even if I am mad or have an overwhelming feeling. We all have times when we feel angry or overwhelmed. It is normal. As adults we have learned ways to manage these feelings. We teach students that it is how we handle those feelings and how we apply what we learned in the future. Often times at school, those overwhelming feelings come out at recess. Therefore, our teachers and resource aides are utilizing "skill building" time at recess to help teach a group and/or individual that may be struggling with area(s) or skills. In the classroom, a teacher might utilize "triage" to ease anxiety about a specific subject area or problem. Our job as adults is to teach students strategies to cope with their overwhelming feelings in a respectful and productive way.
