Happy New Year! Welcome to the Future!
Sometimes it is hard to comprehend how rapidly and frequently technological advancements take place. Take for instance the Web. Some of us can easily recall a time without the worldwide web and when waiting for dial up connection was nothing short of fascinating. And today, the waiting comes from the time it takes to type in a phrase within the browser field. That dash - the time between no global connectivity to global omniconnectivity - was less than 15 years for most of the developed world. Which begs the question: where will we be 15 years from now? What will the Class of 2033 be able to accomplish that we cannot even fathom at this point? What careers will be created by 2033 that are not in existence today? How will global citizens communicate, work, and learn in 2033?
As an educator, you will experience a mind-numbing revolution in education technology within the coming 15 years. Are you ready? Do you welcome the change and challenge, or do you have reservations about adapting? Honestly, if you do not have reservations, you would be abnormal! Change is not easy, but it is necessary to ensure that we are preparing 21st century citizens for what lies ahead, not only for themselves but for their future families. So, it is okay to fear it, to dread it, and to honestly feel an aversion to it. That is our normal human reaction to tough change. But know this, taking a risk to learn something new and intimidating is very much worth the reward, not only to yourself but to coming generations. So take a chance, try it, fail, fail again, and keep failing, but never stopping trying! Because in each trial and error, you learn something new, you learn what does not work, you learn something that will help others, and you grow as an educator. And you know who else grows? That student walking across the graduation stage in June 2033...in 2048...in 2063..........
Welcome to the future......it is already here, and you are an integral part of it!
