Teaching Students to be Successful
Good evening ACES Families,
We have reached the halfway point in the second quarter and are in our fourteenth week of our Getting Along Together program at school. Our Getting Along Together Program is comprised of 11 hour-long lessons in the first weeks of school, followed by weekly, skills focused lessons and Class Councils, for a total of about 60 minutes a week. We have a weekly school wide skill challenge, such as Active Listening, and students are reminded daily of this challenge during morning announcements. While we remind students of these skills and our CHAMPS expectations daily, this is a good time to remind students about our behavioral expectations at ACES and to give parents an overview of our general policies and practices as we support and address student behavior.
Our students have been practicing the Getting Along Together Program, a school wide positive behavior and conflict resolution program, which helps students learn how to engage socially with success. For example we encourage students not to jump to conclusions, to apologize quickly if they accidentally bump into another student, and to tell others how an action made them feel. They practice these skills weekly during their class meetings and these are reinforced throughout our school, including at recess.
Safety, social development and exercise are our top priorities at recess where our trained Break Aides support our children to play and engage appropriately. As the Break Aides monitor student behavior they refer back to our Getting Along Together lessons and CHAMPS expectations for recess. Aides give support and listen to concerns in the moment, making corrections as necessary to promote a safe and fun environment for students. In classrooms students work together with the supervision and guidance of their teachers, and in our primary classes, like kindergarten, we have additional aide support to help our youngest students learn the social and emotional skills to be successful in school. When there is a concern with behaviors that teachers feel is beyond the scope of the classroom, students are referred to our Behavior Technician, the counselor or the principal, depending on the circumstance.
Between the Behavior Technician, the counselor and me, we investigate the situation and look to support, provide guidance, and apply appropriate school or district level correction as necessary. Each situation is unique, and we need specific information in order to work through our discipline processes. We investigate and talk to as many students as necessary to get a clear understanding of the incident. As we do this, while we will report back general findings about situations, we are only able to share information on disciplinary consequences with parents of the student receiving consequences.
I invite you to email me directly at Teresa.Lesage@k12northstar.org if you have specific concerns you would like me to address. You are also welcome to contact Eielson AFB School Liaison Officer Earnest Kincade at (907) 385-9460. We want Anderson-Crawford Elementary to be a safe, welcoming environment for all students and families.
