PTA NEWS FLASH
Indian Knoll Elementary
Letter from the Principal
Summer is around the corner and we are headed into field days and end of the year celebrations. As we reflect on the year, I am thankful for our caring and hard-working students and the partnerships we have developed with families. Our PTA is incredible and continues to collaborate with the school and has been able to provide supplemental school materials and enhancements all year long. The administration has a strong focus on technology and was able to provide new iPads and computers to many classrooms this year. Next year, we will create an IKES “science lab” fully equipped with microscopes, lab tables, and hands-on activities for our students.
We are already planning for next year and have tentatively finished all class placements. We will continue to send out placement post cards over the summer with the official news of your child’s classroom. We are thrilled that we will have very little change in staffing for next year. If you know of anyone who hasn’t registered for kindergarten yet, please encourage them to go onto Registration Gateway and start that process. https://registration.cherokeek12.net/
Next year, we will continue using our Bird House PBIS initiatives, positive reinforcement, and we will have a directed focus on being kind and caring Firebirds. We want every child to feel that they are special and valued at IKES. As this year comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our stakeholders for supporting our efforts. Please have a safe and relaxing summer break. #IKESRocks
Sincerely,
Kim Cerasoli
Principal

Active Kids, Healthy Teeth
Dr. J. Miles Mazzawi
As the school year winds down, summer sporting activities wind up. Each year there are approximately 3 million cases of facial trauma. About 50% of these involve teeth! Boys are three times more likely to suffer from a dental related trauma, and about 40% of these accidents happen of the baseball field! Bicycle and skateboarding accidents are also common causes of broken teeth.
Here are some important tips to keeping your active kids’ teeth healthy:
Always wear a mouth guard! There are three different types of mouth guards; stock or “prefabricated”, “boil-n-bite”, and custom fabricated mouth guards. For maximum protection, a custom mouth guard made by your dentist is the best choice. But, any protection is better than no protection.
Know what to do if your child suffers a dental injury! First off, always check to child to make sure there is not a more emergent issue such as a concussion.
• If a baby tooth is knocked out, rinse the mouth with water and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. Baby teeth should not be replanted because of potential damage to the developing permanent teeth.
• If a permanent tooth is knocked out, replace the tooth in the socket and hold it there with a clean gauze or wash cloth. If this cannot be accomplished, place the tooth in a clean container of cold milk or the child’s saliva, but NOT IN WATER.
• If a tooth is chipped or broken, rinse the mouth with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you can find the broken tooth fragment, take it with you to the dentist.
Always go to your pediatric dentist in the case of any dental trauma! It is important to have a trusted pediatric dentist available to call in the event of any tooth injury. A timely visit to the dentist can make a huge difference in the long term health of the traumatized tooth. Enjoy the summer, be careful, and stay safe!
