Chapter 6: Using Strategies That Appear in All Types of Lessons
Element 15: Previewing Strategies
Previewing strategies provide students with a glimpse of the content that the teacher is about to address. Cognitively speaking, previewing strategies help activate students' prior knowledge. While such strategies are very common in direct instruction lessons, they are also applicable to practicing and deepening lessons as well as knowledge application lessons. Any time a significant amount of new content is presented, teachers are well advised to help activate students' prior knowledge. The specific strategies associated with this element appear in the table below.
