Spring - A Season of Appreciation
April and May are traditional times of celebration and recognition for many of our school staff members. Here is a list of the scheduled Appreciation Days:
- National Library Week - April 8-12 (LEISD School Librarian Appreciation Day, April 4)
Administrative Professionals (Secretaries) Week - April 22 - 26 (LEISD Administrative Professional Day, April 24)
LEISD Teacher Appreciation Week - April 29 - May 3rd
National Teacher Appreciation Week - Mat 6 - 10
School Bus Driver Appreciation Day - May 2
School Lunch Hero Day (Child Nutrition) - May 3
National School Nurse Day - May 8
National Police Appreciation Week - May 13-17
If you are looking for a fast way to shift your mood and perspective, then the power of appreciation is the way to go. Practicing gratitude helps us focus on what is going well in our lives and what is working. It trains our brains to focus on the good rather than the bad. It instills hope and reminds us of how much we have to be thankful for. The more you notice the little things, the more you will develop an optimistic and positive attitude towards your life.
It is very common in today's society for people to focus on the negatives instead of the positives in their lives. Just turn on the news, read the posts on Facebook and Twitter, listen to talk shows and podcasts, the popular stance in all of these mediums is to criticize, blame, shame, and brutally condemn everyone in sight. People tend to focus their energy on complaining about the things they don't have as opposed to the things they do have. This needs to change. Our energy should be used to emphasize appreciation for the opportunities, people and blessings in our lives. We have much more to be thankful for than we think.
The act of showing appreciation should be done everyday. No one of importance in your life should ever question their importance to you. If they mean the world to you, tell them. If you cannot imagine your life without them, tell them. All the time. Remind your best friend how important he/she is to you. Always remember to tell your family how much you love them. Don't ever go a day without letting at least one person know you appreciate them.
Just a simple text to a friend telling them you miss them can change their day for the better. A quick five-minute call from a teacher to a parent to share something positive can brighten their whole day and will also create a special bond between student and teacher. The easiest way to tell someone you appreciate them is by saying "thank you." To the stranger that just held the door for you, a simple "thank you" shows you acknowledge and appreciate their action. Telling someone you appreciate them takes little to no time or effort, so why not do it more?
We will facilitate this culture of thanks by offering the ability to send Shout Outs. A Shout Out is a special recognition that acknowledges a LEHS student, teacher, staff member or program who has demonstrated a special effort, an outstanding job, a project of high quality and/or has shown exceptional kindness to others through their service. Lobo Shout Outs will be shared with the person who is recognized as well as randomly published on the official LEHS Twitter Feed, Facebook Page, Weekly Newsletter, and Electronic Boards in the Main Concourse. Click on the Shout Out banner below to submit a Lobo Shout Out. Anyone (student, teacher, staff member, parent, community member) is welcome to submit a Lobo Shout Out!
It is my hope that these small acts of appreciation will remind us all of how much we have to be thankful for and will be an example of our district core value, "Creating a community where every student loves to learn, every teacher loves to teach and every person is proud to call home."

Congratulations to our LEHS Boys State Delegates!
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each student becomes a part of the operation of his local, county, and state government.
Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935, when it organized to counter the fascist-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a similar program for young women called Girls State.
At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities, of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical, with city, county, and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices.

In preparation for these important graduation requirements, we are planning some specialized tutoring during the school day. In January we administered a STAAR benchmark assessment from TEA and experimented with a block schedule. As you know we have one period (5th) that is already on a block schedule (meets every other day). While this schedule is not practical for the entire year, it was a successful schedule for providing extra time for special projects. We will use this special schedule on the following dates:
March (A-27, B-28)
April (A-2, B-3, A-16, B-17, A-24, B-25, A-30, B- May 1)
A days odd periods; B days even periods - See bell schedule below.
This schedule allows for extended time (1 hour 45 minutes each period) on a single day. While this extended time will allow EOC teachers the opportunity for strategic EOC preparation, other teachers will have the opportunity on these dates to plan other extended time projects needed in their content area.

Are you an Alum of LEHS?
It is our pleasure to announce that our LEISD Communications department is embarking on the first steps of creating an official Alumni Association for LEHS. We understand that there may be some existing alumni Facebook page(s) and we are trying to make it easier to communicate with alumni. Our LEISD Eduction Foundation has also been working on this project and we're hoping to use the power of our social media to strengthen their efforts.
1. Please use the form, linked here, to submit your alumni information. Share, share, share this form as you see fit to all current alumni groups or individuals.
2. LEISD Communications has created an email address where alumni can get information and communicate with the District - alumni@littleelmisd.net
3. An alumni webpage is a work in progress -www.littleelmisd.net/alumni to share even more information.
We are hoping to capture as many class of 2019 students as we can before they head off to their next adventures. This will be a great place to start - but that's not all. We want as many alumni as we can find, from as far back as we can go. If we could manage to get a few well known alumni to Tweet or share with their alumni friends the efforts can multiply quickly.
Please share, share, share with your contacts, social media outlets, or however you need. Help us engage our alumni to connect our Lobo Nation. One Community, One Pack Alumni united can benefit our current students and keep the Lobo Spirit alive for generations.
Teenagers who are anxious or depressed often turn to pot or alcohol to make themselves feel better. It's easy to get, their friends are doing it, and there’s no stigma attached. It may actually help with their symptoms in the short term. But substance use can also delay and undermine their ability to get effective, lasting help and put them on a collision course with addiction.
This week on childmind.org we feature a comprehensive guide to substance use and mental health disorders, developed in collaboration with the Partnership for Drug Free Kids. In it we examine how substance use interacts specifically with disorders in adolescents and young adults — how does it affect symptoms, behavior, treatment, and long-term prognosis? The guide is for both parents and teenagers themselves, it’s downloadable, and we hope it will enable families to make decisions that will be effective for them, now and in the future.

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
To send a report from the Web/Internet go to: www.anonymousalerts.com/littleelmisd/
To send a report from your phone:
