We are so excited (and a little anxious) to get this school year started! We have a lot of IMPORTANT information to share in our first newsletter, so please take the time to read over everything. If you have any questions, please reach out to us, we are here to help you anyway we can. Most importantly, don't get stressed out if something isn't working right. We deal with technical issues everyday and they are bound to happen no matter how hard we try to prepare for them. One key thing is to make sure you communicate with your teacher any time you are having issues, even if it means you have to pick up a phone and make a call. While this is definitely not the start to a typical year, we know it is still going to be AMAZING because that's how we do it at Buckhorn High School!!! #BuckPride

MEET OUR NEW FACULTY MEMBERS
Please join us in welcoming our new faculty members.
We are so excited to have them join the Buckhorn High School family!!
Mrs. Molly Riser, Instructional Assistant Principal
B.S. Secondary Mathematics Education
M.S.Ed. PK-12 Educational Administration and Leadership
Mrs. Riser joins the BHS team as the Instructional Assistant Principal. Prior to this position, Mrs. Riser spent two years in Virginia as a STEM Director and K-12 Instructional Trainer for Math, Science, CTE, and Fine Arts while also teaching three math classes. Mrs. Riser has also taught high school mathematics in Connecticut. Mrs. Riser comes to BHS with a strong background in STEM, Project-Based Learning, and collaborating in PLCs.
Mrs. Riser has moved to the area thanks to her husband's career beginning on the arsenal. Mrs. Riser and her husband are both grounded in mathematics and education and frequently discuss such matters over dinner. She and her husband enjoy exercising, attending to their German Shepherd, Yasha, and video games!
Her favorite quote is from one of her exercise instructors, Emma Lovewell, "Change is inevitable, growth is optional." Mrs. Riser loves this quote because of its applicability to education and the development of high school students to adults.
Mrs. Riser is so excited to be joining the Buckhorn High School team and hopes to support students and teachers in their professional growth!
Mrs. Ashley Franzen, School Counselor
B.A., Psychology, University of Tennessee
M.Ed., School Counseling, Liberty University
National Board-Certified Counselor
Mrs. Franzen is in her first year as a School Counselor and will be serving 9th grade. She is excited about being a part of the Buckhorn family and looks forward to interacting with her students and parents. Mrs. Franzen has a passion for helping others and watching them succeed.
In her spare time, Mrs. Franzen enjoys spending time with her husband and two young girls. One of her favorite hobbies is cooking and trying new recipes – luckily, she has a husband willing to try all of them! She also enjoys cheering on her school’s sports teams (GO VOLS!) and is excited to be a Buck!
Her favorite quote is “We all have problems. The way we solve them is what makes us different.” ~Unknown
Dr. Kelsey Gillam, Science
B.S., Science, James Cook University (Australia)
Ph.D., Coastal Science, University of Southern Mississippi
Dr. Gillam is joining the Science department this year and will be teaching Biology and Earth and Space Science. This will be her sixth year teaching. She taught at Lee High School for the past two years, and at Havelock High School in North Carolina before moving back to Huntsville. She loves teaching high school because she likes forming relationships with the students and leading students to form a love for science.
Dr. Gillam graduated from Buckhorn in 2005, has a B.S in Biology from James Cook University in Australia, and a Ph.D. in Coastal Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. Before teaching, she spent seven years as a marine biologist conducting research on climate change and the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill on marine animals. She met her husband, Patrick Gillam, while working in the same lab. They have a crazy, science-loving, 2-year old son named Finn.
Mr. Kevin Gray, Mathematics
B.S. Mathematics w/ Secondary Education, UAH
M.A. Secondary Mathematics Education, UNA
This will be Mr. Gray’s 16th year as a math teacher, and his 34th year as a math student. He entered teaching because of his love for mathematics, as well as desiring to pass along the inspiration to learn that was given to him by his own teachers. He loves learning new things, helping others learn new things, and loves the experience of seeing and figuring out how different minds put things together differently. He is excited to be teaching Geometry and Algebra 1 this year! He looks forward to teaching each of you, and hopefully learning from you as well.
Mr. Gray and his wife, Bethany, live in Huntsville and have been married for 14 years. They have 7 children, Eli (who went to be with the Lord in 2019 at age 12), Canaan (11), Joel (10), Lillianna (9), Lucy (7), Peter (4), and Noah (1 month). Our house is very fun, crazy, and loud! We love hanging out with friends, doing outdoor activities like camping, and playing music. We are very active in our church and have spent a little over 4 months in the last 5 years doing mission work as a family in La Mosquitia, Honduras.
Mr. Gray really loves math (I think you will find this to be true yourself). A couple of quotes related to math that he likes are: “The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple." ~Stan Gudder, and “Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics.” ~Dean Charles Schlichter.
Mr. Charlie Hetzer, Career & Technical Education
M.A., Physical Education
Mr. Hetzer comes to Buckhorn with 25 years experience, including positions as an Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, Dean, Teacher and Coach. This year, he will be teaching Career Prep and helping with the Football program here at Buckhorn. Mr. Hetzer has taught in many states including California, Arizona, Nevada and served as an Assistant Professor at Alabama A&M for six years here in Alabama. He enjoys all types of aquatic sports, fishing, art, and cooking! He and his wife, Leslie, have four children and seven wonderful grandchildren. He tells us that he loves Westerns and should have been a cowboy!
Mrs. Yolanda Leonard, Collaborative Learning
B.S.Ed., Special Education (MLBD) K-12, Alabama A&M University
M.A., Reading & Curriculum Instruction, Grand Canyon University
Mrs. Leonard joins our team with 17 years experience. She will serve as a collaborative teacher for grade 9-12 at Buckhorn. She loves spending time with her family and in her spare time she sells houses! She is happily married and has four beautiful children. Mrs. Leonard became a teacher because she will forever be impacted by some of her teachers that she had growing up. She particularly remembers the ones who reached her during their lessons to make sure she was being the best she could be! Her hope was and still is to be one of those who have and will continue to reach students so that she can teach them to the best they can be as well. Her favorite quote is, "Strive each day to be better than you were the day before." ~Unknown
Mr. Bill Livermore, Work-Based Learning Coordinator
Bill Livermore is returning to Buckhorn where he taught Finance, Law, Engineering, and Career Prep for 13 years. For the past two years, he supported Hazel Green High School in the role of Work-Based Learning Coordinator. He brings many years of experience outside of teaching that he says benefit him greatly as Buckhorn's Work-Based Learning (Co-op) Coordinator. "I've had a steady job since I was 15 and summer jobs before that in many different industries which help me relate to the various employers our students work for," he says.
Mr. Livermore earned an Associate degree at Hillsborough Community College before going into the Army and serving in Operation Desert Storm. He then completed a Business Administration degree from the University of Central Florida and worked in Corporate America for some of the largest electronic manufacturers before finally earning his Masters in Business Education at Alabama A&M and coming to Buckhorn in 2005. "I was tired of hearing people complain about young people so I decided to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem", he adds.
Bill will maintain an office across from the cafeteria at BHS and one at the Career Tech Center but he says 80% of the time he is out talking with employers, and finding opportunities for our students. He adds "I want to be of service to all BHS students, not just the Co-op students on my roster".
He and his wife Kathy have two sons. A.J. who is a sophomore at BHS and Will who will be in 7th grade at BMS.
His favorite quote is, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." ~Chinese Proverb
Mr. Wes Patterson, Career & Technical Education
B.S. Athens State in Physical Education
M.A. West Alabama in Physical Education
Coach Patterson will be teaching Career Prep at Buckhorn High School. He has been in education for ten years. Last year, he taught at Hazel Green High School. His favorite thing about teaching is being able to have a positive impact on his students' lives. Coach Patterson is from Arab, Alabama. He has two children. Camden is 3 and Ali Kate is 1. His wife, Alex, teaches at Riverton Intermediate. Coach Patterson also will be assisting with the football program at BHS. When he is not teaching and coaching he is spending time with his family at the lake.

Sign Up to Round Up!
The Round Up Program was started by The Schools Foundation and Huntsville Utilities to support local public school systems. The Schools Foundation is a funding partner of Madison County Schools. The more residential and commercial locations that round up, the more funding we can receive. Estimates show that if just half of the residential Huntsville Utilities users rounded up, it would generate approximately $500,000 to support our schools! By rounding up your utility bill to the nearest dollar each month, you help invest in the future of our students!
You can easily sign up to round up online:
http://www.hsvutil.org/myhsvu…/checkbill/roundup/signup.html
It might be a penny, it might be 25 cents, it might be 99 cents, but it will be no more than $11.88 a year. It takes less than 1 minute to fill out.
Thank you for supporting one of our community partners! Go Bucks!
