From the Principal's Desk

Dear Oriole Students and Families:


We made it! It is hard to believe that the 2021-2022 school year is behind us. Our students accomplished many amazing things during the course of the school year and I am incredibly proud of our students, staff, and community for all that we have accomplished together.


As we put the proverbial bow on the 21-22 school year, our team turns its attention to the 22-23 academic year. Our administration and counseling team is working hard to complete student schedules for the upcoming school year. We plan on distributing student schedules via the PowerSchool Parent Portal during the week of August 15th.


Our annual Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, August 30th at 7 pm. We plan on revamping this event and will share additional information to students and families prior to the event this August. Our sixth grade orientation will take place on Thursday, September 1st. During this event, our incoming sixth graders will receive tours and important information from our eighth grade student mentors and will have the opportunity to navigate the building prior to the start of the school year. Also on September 1, we will have an orientation for any seventh and eighth grade student that is new to our school community. We will also have a sneak peek for returning seventh and eighth graders that day as well.


Our team will continue to communicate with families over the summer to highlight the events that we will be hosting to start next school year. Throughout the summer, our main communications will come from the LASD webpage, the OJ Parent Facebook page, and via Twitter @OJ_Orioles. All of the important events will also be communicated through PowerSchool announcements via phone calls, emails, and text messages.

Bond Update- Summer Projects at the Middle and High School

Below is a summary of the scope of bond work taking place next school year. The bond projects beginning this summer are called Phase 1 and they go to August of 2023. Projects for the summer of 2023 are called Phase 1A. All of this is subject to change as supply chains and the market are very unpredictable right now.


Phase 1 building scope (high school) includes:

  • Demolish current athletic office. Interior demolition of horizons and trailblazers’ classrooms.
  • New construction for the high school classroom addition that includes 8 classrooms, 1 staff lounge and restrooms.
  • New construction for the new high school secure entrance, lobby, and administrative office.
  • Heavy renovation to accommodate new high school collaboration center, computer lab, wellness room and storage space.
  • Heavy renovation of existing mechanical and receiving areas south of Hawley gym to support new infrastructure.


Phase 1 building scope (middle school) includes:

  • New construction for middle school classroom addition that includes 8 classrooms, 2 science labs and restrooms.
  • Heavy renovation of 6 classrooms west of existing Art room.
  • Heavy renovation of existing mechanical room south of middle school gym to support new infrastructure.


Phase 1 Site scope:

  • High school staff/visitor parking lot.


Phase 1A building scope:

  • Interior renovation of corridor near pool/north gym all the way through the building and connecting into the new high school entrance lobby.
  • Hawley Gym improvements (paint, equipment updates, bleacher replacement, window replacement).
  • Heavy renovation of existing band and choir classrooms.
  • Light renovation of existing middle school industrial arts classroom.
  • Light renovation to existing science labs connected to the greenhouse.
  • Heavy renovation of science labs on opposite side of corridor from light renovation labs.
  • Heavy renovation to add new group restrooms to corridor connecting high school science area to corridor adjacent to the auditorium.


Phase 1A Site scope:

  • High school student parking lot.


Impacts of Phase 1 Projects:

Below is a summary of how the above mentioned projects will affect the buildings.

  • HS Impacts Corridor connecting Science rooms and cafeteria will be closed off.
  • Access into school will be from auditorium with temporary parking lot in the current band practice field.
  • Science storage room between 354/350 will need to be emptied to create temporary egress.
  • A temporary egress corridor will need to be created from cafeteria courtyard through oriole academy.
  • Create temporary wall in computer lab 318 for additional classroom.
  • Athletics office to move into office area by media center.
  • Horizons moves to 408 health room, Kirby moves to temporary classroom in computer lab.
  • The windows in the woodshop/machine shop need to get removed and infilled for the HS office addition.
  • A temporary wall will be created about 3’ from the wall. MS Impacts 6 classrooms will be offline.
  • Temporary locations indicated on plan.
  • Create temporary walls in media center and classrooms 228/236.
  • Site HS Parking lot will be eliminated as soon as temporary student parking lot is created at end of August. Enter lot at corner of Russell/Franklin.
  • Buses to park along Washington. Existing bus loop offline.
  • MS parking/drop-off not effected. HS drop off along Anderson West of construction entrance.
