South Ripley Jr High Earns Schools to Watch Re-Designation I

Big picture
South Ripley Junior High in Versailles, IN earned their Schools to Watch Re-Designation I, a prime example of a school that has not simply rested on its laurels since its initial achievement. Their application included many items that have been added or improved since 2015-16, incorporating a more diverse curriculum, more teacher collaboration, and more student choice. For instance, each advisory class selects and executes their own service project. The picture above is from a group who made blankets for a nearby domestic abuse service center. Their community connections are strong, with some related to their service learning, going beyond simply collecting money or items, frequently involving time or personal commitments. Congratulations!

Brownsburg West Middle School Holds Unified Champions in the Middle Celebration

Big picture
Brownsburg West Middle School held their Unified Champions in the Middle Celebration during an evening of basketball on December 11. Celebrants included Travis Smith of Tri-West, representing IMLEA; Lee Lonzo of Special Olympics, Athletic Director Kiel Atkinson, and administrators and student participants. Where is their banner? It's already displayed high up in the gym! They received it at the IMLEA conference.

Are you interested in joining the Champions in the Middle program? We are setting up trainings for the month of February. Ideally, they would involve 1-2 staff members and at least 2-3 students from each school; it is a student-led program. Our goal is to hold these at 3-4 different schools around the state during the school day, for about two hours. Interested? Contact Susie Highley

Sunman-Dearborn Holds Large-Scale Community Service Day

Sunman-Dearborn Middle School recently held their 2nd annual Community Service Day. Over 1000 students and staff members participated in a variety of activities which gave back to the community. Some of those activities included; care packages to soldiers, blanket making for women and homeless shelters, dog treats/toys for animal shelters, making of games for elementary schools, and so on. Additionally 400+ students were able to leave school and volunteer at animal shelters, nursing homes, food pantries, and local elementary schools. S-DMS students raised more than 2500 non-perishable items for local food pantries. Principal Dr. Matt Maple stated: "this day is possible because we have a phenomenal staff, great students, and a very supportive community. It is awesome to see all 930 students and 80 staff members working together to make our community better. Students may not totally understand the impact they are making today, but as they grow older they will hopefully understand the importance of giving back."
