SCCS Home Bulletin

FROM DR. B.
Happy Wednesday, Trailblazers!
Let’s keep going with the series ABCs of SCCS. This week, we’ll check out W = walkthroughs.
Walkthroughs are short classroom visits done by a school leader. The intent of walkthroughs is to have school leaders present in classrooms, to get a sense for how things are going in the school, to provide support and accountability, and to connect with students. These walkthroughs last about 10-15 minutes and are done several times during the school year with each faculty member, with all walkthroughs unannounced.
School leaders take notes on the walkthroughs and follow up with teachers in face-to-face conversations, where encouragement and ideas for growth are shared and discussed. Walkthroughs are intended to be a source of professional and personal growth for our teachers. Rather than a “one and done” evaluation where teachers know a school leader is coming to visit, prepare and teach a lesson with a school leader watching, and then have a follow-up on that lesson, walkthroughs happen consistently and over time, providing school leaders with several touch points with each classroom and teachers with several opportunities for encouragement and growth.
What happens in the classroom is the most important thing happening at Sioux Center Christian School. It’s where student lives are truly impacted. It’s important for school leaders to be present in these learning spaces, and we continue to invest in leadership at SCCS to be able to spend time in classrooms. We have over 40 classrooms to perform walkthroughs in and want to be able to do this work well. Currently, Jill Van Soelen and Lisa Mouw spend large portions of their day in classrooms performing walkthroughs and then follow-up conversations. Next year, Brandon Haan and Jill Van Soelen will continue these walkthroughs.
We continue to invest in our core purpose at SCCS: training God’s kids in His Way through all areas of study. Walkthroughs are one method for helping us do just that.
Have a great rest of your week!
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
- Please check the online calendar for upcoming events (http://www.siouxcenterchristian.com/calendar.cfm)
- Safety Reminder: If your child walks or rides bike to and from school, please remind them to use caution when crossing streets. If there is a crosswalk, please push the button so that the light activates before crossing. Thanks for helping keep our kids safe!
- Sioux Center Community Schools do not have school on Friday, April 29 but SCCS does. Only the two Sioux Center Christian School buses (2014 and 2020) will be running the morning and afternoon routes on those days. All other students will need to have their own transportation.
- Because of a conflict with Western's High School Graduation, the 5-8 Spring Choral Concert will be rescheduled to Monday, May 16 at Centerpoint Church (First Reformed). Please make this change on your calendars!
- Storyline Celebration will be held at Dordt on Monday, May 23.
- Our last day of school will be Wednesday, May 25. We will dismiss at 11:05.
- 8th Grade Graduation will be at Centerpoint Church (First Reformed) on Wednesday, May 25.
SCHOOL LUNCH UPDATE
There has been a great thing going for about 2 years, but we have been informed that the government will no longer be providing free meals for all students, starting with the 22-23 school year. Our lunch program is currently determining lunch prices for next year and taking into account the rising cost of food. It would be a good idea to start putting money into your school lunch account for next year so that we all can be ready to go at the beginning of the school year. Kelli Van Roekel (kvanroekel@siouxcenterchristian.com) can help with this process. Also, please note that the federal poverty guidelines have been released, and we anticipate more families will qualify for free or reduced meals next year (the income levels have increased as far as qualification standards). We will share more about completing a free and reduced meals application as part of the registration process in August. If you have any questions, please contact Eileen Buiter (ebuiter@siouxcenterchristian.com).
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU to ALL who made our 8th annual Trail’Raiser Night a joyful, community-building event that COMPLETED the FUNDING goal for the 7/8 science lab/classroom in the future Blazer Center campus addition! We believe a science lab is a window to God’s handiwork, where students discover the fingerprints of God in EVERYTHING and are thankful for everyone who donated to make this piece of our vision happen!
Through Prayer Pens, Truth T-shirts, Gourmet Cupcakes, Bars, and Snack Mixes, Buy It Now items, Freewill Supper, Concessions, and the Family Feud game show, our supporters gave $125,662 in donations! When combined with year-end IGNITE the Giving donations and gifts from key donors, we are very excited to report that we have reached the $500,000 needed to build this important room in the campus expansion! (Bringing us to over $3 million raised/committed to the campus expansion!)
We estimate that over 1,200 people walked through our doors on Saturday, April 9 – a beautiful day God provided after a very windy and cold week!
The Family Feud Game Show was held in a gym full of people! Our game show host, Nick M, our announcer, Piet W, and the four amazing teams (Bunyans, Dunksters, Marvels, and Nerds), gave us a night we won’t soon forget! The Dunksters won $15,000 (for SCCS) by winning the rounds and the Marvels won $10,000 (for SCCS) by winning the Fast Money round!

THANK YOU to ALL who blessed our SCCS kids - current and future students - by contributing to Trail'Raiser Night 2022 and helping build the science lab/classroom in the future Blazer Center addition!
