Cedar Grove Friday Flash
May 15, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
It's hard to believe we are already into mid-May as we end another week of distance learning. As we prepare for next week, please note the following information regarding science and social studies that will be provided to students within the myMCPS Classroom.
Beginning next week, pre-recorded science lessons will be provided and will be available for your child's viewing during a time that is convenient during his or her week. There will be one video lesson each week, as well as student learning experiences and materials that your child should complete after viewing the video. Video lessons are 20-30 minutes in length and focus on science and engineering practices. Please note that there is no requirement for student submission of science work, and there is no live interaction with teachers for these lessons. However, all students are expected to engage in the video lessons and follow up work, and by doing so will be better prepared for future science instruction.
In addition, optional social studies lessons will also be provided centrally by MCPS to students beginning Monday of next week. Your child may chose to participate in these lessons if he or she wishes to do so. Since these are not teacher produced or live lessons, these lessons may be viewed at a convenient time if desired. There will be no live interaction, no required student work submissions, or teacher comments/feedback provided.
Last weekend, there was a Zoom update which may affect how your student accesses Zoom through MyMCPS classroom. The first time you attempt to access Zoom through the MyMCPS classroom, you may see an error message that asks you to authorize your email address. Click the I authorize button and everything should be fine.
Reminders and general information:
Watch lessons from Eureka Math, find read aloud stories, and get MCPS News on MCPS-TV, (cable channels Comcast 34, Verizon 36, and RCN 89). The Eureka Math lessons are taught by teachers from Greatminds.org. View the schedule to find out when the programs will air by grade level, module, and lesson.
Math packets for weekly lessons can be found bu clicking on the following link. Please scroll down to the bottom left of the page.
- The technology help line is 240-740-7022. Please have your name, your child’s name, MCPS ID number, phone number or email address and the issue ready.

Hi Cedar Grove Artists,
Thank you for all the students who participated in the KidsKreations art fundraiser this year! I wanted to give an update on the orders that were placed. The school closure has caused an unexpected delay, but the orders will be arriving soon at our school! Students who placed an order will be able to pick up their orders from school starting June 1st. You may stop by the school to pick up the orders on Mondays from 9 AM-12 PM. I will send out another reminder on June 1st, to make sure you remember to pick up your wonderful creations!
For those who wanted to purchase something, but were unable to because of the closure, it's still not too late! You can continue to order online until May 29th, 2020 using your Art ID code and have it delivered directly to your home. To place an order online until May 29: Follow directions located on the back of your personalized brochure. Visit Cedar Grove’s Kids Kreations Webstore. Enter your Art ID Code in the search bar. Kindergarten Orientation
From Mrs. Spoales, Our School Counselor
Hello Parents,
I've received a few emails asking for my advice on television shows and movies that are age appropriate or contain positive themes for elementary aged children. I am happy to provide suggestions for your family, but I wanted to share a resource that is is fabulous and quick! I use the "Common Sense Media" website ALL the time at home with my own kids as they find new shows/movies to watch. You simply search the show, movie or book (yes, books too!) and it will give you an overall appropriate age range and more detailed ratings from parents and kids. You can also search by age if you don't have a particular show in mind. Hope you find this website as helpful as I do! https://www.commonsensemedia.org/
Please let me know if you have any questions!

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Our Media Specialist
Hello everyone! I hope this finds you well as we continue our distance learning! Here is the May Media Monthly! Please bookmark and visit this page often. I will be updating it as media activities are posted in The Virtual Media Center in MyMCPS Classroom! Your students should see the tile on their dashboard. These are what I call My-Choice media activities, created for each grade level and are completely optional! In addition, the Virtual Media Center is loaded with online resources -- everything from eBooks and Read-Alouds to Informational databases. And, for our students who are logging into an MCPS Chromebook with their MCPS Google accounts, here is the slide show with the Morning News Blast embedded so they can see the morning news (and our special guest videos!). I miss all of your children so much, and I hope that you are all seizing the moments as we experience this historical event together.
What Are You Reading?
Mrs. Hirschhorn is creating another project -- we want to see you and the books you are reading! And, we are happy to take pictures with your readers holding the book in front of their faces, if it makes you more comfortable! Above all, please make sure we can see the covers of the books in the picture! Email your photos to Mrs. Hirschhorn as soon as possible. The deadline is Wednesday, May 20. Thank you!
From Mr. Jansson, PE Teacher
Hi Everyone,
I hope this finds you well. We will continue with online learning for May and June. Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade will be working on Strength, Flexibility, and Endurance. Students in 3rd through 5th grades will be working on Health Fitness Components. Try your best to participate in the lessons. There have been issues with some students getting locked out of assessments. One way to trouble shoot is to make sure you have done all the components in the lessons. Don't skip right to the quiz. If you are still having issues, do not worry. We are aware of the problem. The main thing I want is for you to participate and try the lessons.
I am sad we will not be having BEAR DAY, but I sent out this week a virtual field day for you and your family. This is totally optional and there is nothing that needs to be turned in to me. If you have time try a few activities and have fun!!!
Take care & be healthy,
Mr. Jansson
