Antietam
The bloodiest battle to have ever been fought
September 17th 1862
- The union general was McClellan
- The confederate generals were Jackson & Lee
- It was barely a union victory
- 1st attempt by Lee to invade the North
- The significance of this battle was that Lincoln was able to take this victory to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. It stated that all slaves in rebelling southern states are now free.

Antietam was the bloodiest battle that took place in a single day. It is an estimated 22,720 causalities as an end result from this battle.

Bloodiest Battle
This battle caused a lot of heartache and tragedy for lost loved ones. Death was one thing that connected both the north and the south at this time. Everyone knew the heartache of losing a loved one. In this battle it became more evident of how awful and tragic this war was becoming.

To the left is General McClellan. He was the general for the north.
To the right is General Robert E. Lee. He was the general for the south.
Free the Slaves
This document was written and spoken by Abraham Lincoln. When the north won this narrow victory over the south, Lincoln used this opportunity to free all of the slaves that were in the rebelling states in the south.
Grave after grave after grave
Since there were so many deaths at one time they couldn't possibly dig enough proper graves for them all. Many were laid in ditches dug by slaves or put in very shallow graves.
