My BIG question

Elements compounds and mixtures are different ?

ELEMENTS. --- ATOMS

An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom. The word atom was created by a Greek philosopher called Democritus. He said that everything was made up of tiny pieces . Democritus called his tiny pieces of matter atoms. 'Atom' means 'cannot be divided'. Now we know that atoms really exist. Today we can see the largest kinds of atoms, using a very special microscopes called : scanning tunneling microscopes.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF ATTOMS --- ELEMENTS

There are many different types of atoms. Scientists have discovered 94 different kinds of atoms. Another 24 kinds made in the laboratories. Some substances are made of just one type of atom. This is called an element. For example: Gold is only made of gold atoms. Carbon is only made of carbon atoms. Silver is only made of silver atoms.

Atoms joining together.

Other substances are made up of little groups of atoms. The atoms join together in groups of two or more. A group of atoms joined tightly together is called a molecule.

THE PERIODIC TABLE.

Scientists have developed a very useful way of arranging elements. This is called the periodic table. It is a very complex table containing all of the 118 known elements.

Compounds.

Many substances are made up of more than one kind of atom. If the different sorts of atoms are joined together then the substance is called a compound. Once two different elements are bonded they completely lose the properties of the individual elements. The compound has totally new properties.

MIXTURES.

A mixture is not pure.It is made up of different kinds of particles that are mixed together. The mixture may be of elements, compounds or both. There are solids, liquids and gases that are mixtures.

MXTURES--- EXAMPLE

AIR IS MIXTURE.

Air is a mixture of several different elements and compounds. Air contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and and small quantities of some other gases.

ANSWER TO MY BIG QUESTION

To answer my BIG question: "How do we know that elements, compounds, and mixtures are different" is :

an element is made out of one type of atom.

a compound is made out of more than one atom.

a mixture is different kinds of particles mixed together. It might be an element and a compound together.

So this is why they are different.
