RED RIBBON ROLE MODELS
ROLE MODELS JOIN OUR STUDENTS AT WAYNE PRIMARY AS PART OF RED RIBBON WEEK
The primary students enjoyed having special 8th grade visitors volunteer their
time on Wednesday, October 25th, to meet with them during lunch. They were
chosen as Red Ribbon Role Models in honor of Red Ribbon Week which was
celebrated throughout our community.
These 8th graders were recommended by their teachers, participated in an after school
training session, and then spent lunch time with WP students. They created posters about their future and the importance of making healthy choices.
These 8th graders are athletes, scouts, musicians, dancers, singers, club members, honors students and more.
They discussed making healthy choices and resisting negative peer pressure to get where they are today.
Excited to share their positive message with WP students, they sat with them,
found out about their goals and dreams and helped them list the healthy choices they need to make their dreams come true.
We also want to thank Marks Pizzeria and Brownell's Farm for donating lunch for all the 8th graders.
As you can see our primary students truly enjoyed getting to know and work with
this fine group of middle school role models!
Thank you to our Red Ribbon Role Models:
Ella Salce, Alyssa Branner, Maddi McIntosh, Kaleb Glessing, Grace Mosier, Thomas Caine,
Emma Gabriel, Sage Lambie, Brady Chimenti, Emma Culver, Madi Mudge, Jenna Schrage,
Aaliyah Zenelovic, Lily Sharpe, Kameron Young, Logan Dempsy, Merrick Bosch, Jill Groff,

Note from the Nurse
MEDICATIONS
If your child will require medication or you would like your child to receive or have available a pain reliever as needed, an order for that medication must be provided by your child's healthcare provider.
New medicine orders are needed at the beginning of each school year as they are only valid for 1 school year.
ALL medications have to be brought in by an adult UNLESS the Dr. has written the medication order as a "self carry" then the form is filed in my office and the child may keep the medication safely in their possession during the school day.
Medications orders can be faxed to me directly to 315-524-1099
6th grade
New York State Education Law mandates that 6th graders must have the TdaP booster immunization by age 11. If your child is in 6th grade, 11 years of age, and has not received this immunization, I strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible with your child's Physician.
Proof of Immunizations not yet sent in may also be faxed directly to the Nurse's office as well. 315-524-1099 or a copy sent into school with your child to be handed in to me. If there is an appt. set up please call my office to supply the date so that it shows your child is "in process" of becoming compliant.
7th grade
New York State Education Law mandates that 7th graders provide a physical and also proof of the Meningococcal vaccine in order to attend school. We can accept a physical dated anytime from September 6th, 2016 until present. Most of the 7th graders are compliant with both of these requirements, if your child is not I have already reached out to the few that need to provide this.
Also feel free to supply a copy of your child's physical when they receive a new one as I am always updating their information in case if eligible they choose to play a sport or do anything else that requires a current physical.
Thank you and please feel free to call with any questions.

5th Grade News
November Happenings for the 5th Grade:
ELA: We have been focusing on the skills of theme, sequencing, nouns and writing personal narratives. We are just about to finish up our first unit in the new reading series Journeys, which has centered around meeting challenges. Please ask your child to share some of the stories we have been reading in class!
Math: We just wrapped up our first unit with adding and subtracting fractions. I would highly suggest continuing to practice fractions due to its intensity in the fifth grade curriculum. We now have moved on to Unit 2, which is adding and subtracting decimals using the place value system. The kids really seem to enjoy it and seems to be easier for most. They are making the connection that decimals are the same thing as fractions. Keep up the great work!
Science (Martin): Students designed and created their own toy with one movable part. They continue to study the Engineering Design Process as they experiment and work on Robotics. The have been working on their final project designing a robot that can enter disaster sites and clean up the area.
Science: In Mr. Liseno’s class we have finished up our first unit about controlled studies and are now beginning to learn about cells. To do this we are using microscopes to study the similarities and differences between animal and plant cells. This includes looking at onion cells along with scraping the inside of our cheeks with a toothpick to see our own cells.
Social Studies: Mrs. Bristol’s and Mr. Shoemaker’s classes have been learning to evaluate the reliability, potential bias, and imbedded messages within media sources. We recently discussed varying viewpoints on celebrating Columbus Day, and we continue to keep tabs on what’s happening in the news. We’ve been learning about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches of the U.S. Government. We brushed up on earth’s continents and oceans, and we’ve begun to figure out how to use latitude and longitude to find a place’s absolute location. As we move through November, we will explore the geography and regions of the United States, find out more about the powers of the branches of our government, and add to our knowledge of American Indian history and cultures.
6th Grade News
6th graders are busy, busy, busy! Please remember to check your child’s agenda for current homework assignments...provided that he/she is writing the assignments down in their agenda. Each teacher has a section of his/her room dedicated to homework assignments; it is every teacher’s expectation that students copy down the assignments.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on the afternoons of Tuesday, November 14th and Thursday, November 16th. Our 6th grade team will be reaching out to parents and guardians by email to set up conferences of selected students by November 1st. If you don’t receive a communication this indicates that the team is not requesting a conference at this time. However, if you feel a need for a conference please feel free to reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher and/or the 6th grade team leader, Faye Eaton (featon@waynecsd.org), and one will be scheduled. Please know that Parent-Teacher Conferences are only one opportunity to meet and collaborate with teachers. We encourage you to contact the school at any time if you have questions or concerns. We will always make time for you either through telephone conversations, email, or face-to-face meetings. Please make sure to check SchoolTool regularly to review your student’s academic progress.
Social Studies:
Sixth grade SS students have wrapped up their first unit on geography. They are now beginning to look at how the first people on the planet not only used the geography and the environment the lived in to adapt and survive. It won’t be long until the kids find out how the discovery of farming (the Neolithic Revolution) completely changed the course of humanity. This will quickly lead to our first civilization of study: Mesopotamia. Students should review their binder notes regularly and keep exploring the games and videos posted on their Social Studies Google Classroom page.
Science
Students are just finishing the end of their Ecosystems unit. November Science is all about energy! Students will be using models and diagrams a lot over the next few weeks, as they begin our energy unit with the study of the atom. Your child will learn about, different types of energy, and electricity! Students will be participating in different labs creating circuits and discovering what are good conductors and insulators. Encourage your child to review his/her notes and vocabulary often.
Health & Family Science - Mr. Molisani
Students have completed group presentations of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The habits help students to apply personal leadership principles to the tough choices they face every day. Please reinforce these habits with your child… they are the key to future success. Next week, students will be assessed on their understanding of adolescent changes, social skills and the 7 Habits.
Math-
The 6th grade continues on a new path with the Math series Envision2.0 created by Pearson. Envision2.0 is a comprehensive program that enables students to apply their mathematical skills to real world problems. Your 6th grader has access to www.pearsonrealize.com with their school login and ID. Not only with they be participating in online assignments and quizzes they can also use the website for a resource. Here is the content that students will be working with Topic 3.ELA - Students continue their first unit, “Facing Fear,” with articles and short stories from the Collections series as well as the novel, Bud, Not Buddy. They also continue to read self - selected DEAR books at individual reading levels. Students are writing text based literature responses related to what they are reading. Ask your child the meaning of the following quote from Bud, Not Buddy – “…when one door closes, don’t worry, because another door opens” – and maybe share a personal anecdote about when this happened for you.
7th Grade News
Social Studies- Unit 2: Colonial Developments is underway! This month we looked at whether Columbus was deserving of a holiday. In addition, students have been working hard on their Colonies Projects!
Band- our 7th grade musicians are working diligently towards our first performance on December 13th. Please encourage consistent home practice. Middle school is a time of sudden and dramatic growth spurts, so I suggest having your student try on his or her black and white concert attire now, so there is time to get a new outfit if the previous one has been outgrown.
ELA- We are currently studying the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. It is the true story of Salva Dut and his experience enduring great hardships as an 11 year old boy in the war torn and drought ridden country of South Sudan. In direct connection to the story we are reading, author Keely Hutton will be visiting us on November 6th and 7th. She wrote the story Soldier Boy which tells the experiences of Ricky Anwar and his story growing up in Uganda, a neighboring country to South Sudan. Ricky was taken and forced to become a child soldier for the war criminal Joseph Kony. Kony remains at large today.
Math 7 accelerated- We are off to a great start working with Rational numbers. Students are working with positive and negative fractions, decimals, and square roots and cube roots.
We are finally using the technology along with the new textbook. Students can access assignments, their textbook, notes, and do on-line quizzes and extra practice of skills.
Math- In Math 7 we are finally starting to use our calculators, so please be sure that your child has one of his or her own. We have moved into the Ratios and Proportions unit where students will be finding unit rates and identifying proportional relationships. Don’t forget that all assignments and suggested video practice can be accessed from the Google Classroom.
Health- We just started our very detailed nutrition unit where we are working on modifying meals from unhealthy to healthy by using POWERMID descriptors. I handed out these packets at curriculum night but each student has one if you would like to take a look. We will be learning about the six essential nutrients, the Myplate concept and also about reading nutrition facts labels and ingredients in food. I am sure your child will come home with some great tidbits of knowledge!
Life Science- Students are finishing up their exploration of cells and their processes. The unit test is scheduled to occur around Veteran’s day. Students will be offered an after school review session before the test. Parents and students may receive text or email notifications via Remind about upcoming assessments, assignments, and review sessions. To sign up, go to remind.com and enter your child’s class code.

Spanish 7 - 7th grade Spanish students have spent the month of October learning how to ask and answer questions that you might ask someone you’re meeting for the first time or that you’d ask a pen pal. We focused on finding out people’s names, how they’re feeling, their ages, what they look like, and some of their personality traits. Students also learned that when speaking with a person whom they’d address as Mr., Miss, or Mrs. the questions changed slightly and had to be asked formally.
During the first part of November, our focus will be on the members of the family. However, we will connect it to what we’ve already learned by asking family members’ names, how they feel, their ages, what they look like, and their personality traits. Please encourage your student to use the family vocabulary at home. It’s a great and natural way to reinforce the vocabulary.
8th Grade News
October 8th Grade Newsletter
ELA 8 Smith: Students just finished reading the magical, yet heartbreaking, short story “The Paper Menagerie.” The text describes the life of an immigrant woman who came to America in the early 1970s who is forced to assimilate to our culture. During her assimilation process, she struggles to learn the language and traditions. She does have a hidden talent though: she can breathe life into paper origami. Our focus for the past few weeks was on defining tone in literature, producing strong writing with correct grammatical skills, and explaining quotes thoroughly with strong reasoning.
Students are now currently working on a science fiction research paper which has the various learning targets of creating a claim, supporting a claim with powerful evidence, producing a counterclaim, and then wrapping up the essay with a conclusion that leaves the reading thinking: what’s next?
Algebra: Algebra students have completed their first unit of instruction and are now learning about linear algebra. In this unit students will build upon their knowledge of solving linear equations to include those that are rational as well as well as finding solutions to systems of linear equations. The unit test will be the week of November 6th. Students have also been assigned their first 20/20. This will be 20 regents questions due on the 20th of each month to help prepare them for the regents exam in June. These assignments are done online through Castle Learning and will be graded, their first 20/20 must be completed by November 20th.
Social Studies: 8th graders are in the midst of their first unit of instruction. This units covers the Industrial Revolution and has students examining many different topics. Students have already learned about the Transcontinental Railroad, the immigration experience, Big Business leaders and child labor. Students completed their first test, evidence based claim writing and produced an immigration project. Soon our students will complete the Triangle Factory fire trial activity which will require them to identify, gather and organize evidence to present at trial. Other students will serve as the jury and evaluate the presented evidence and then deliver a verdict. As you can see we have been very busy learning and examining important events in US history.
Band: Our 8th grade band students are making tremendous progress and really coming together as an ensemble. The skills acquired through lessons and regular home practice allow our musicians to tackle repertoire that is quite intricate and challenging. Gentle encouragement about practicing has a great deal of impact. A reminder to parents that middle school is a time for rapid growth spurts. I would suggest having your student try on their black and white concert attire now, so if they have outgrown anything there will be time to find something new. Our first concert is Wednesday, December 13th!
Math: All math grades can be improved upon until November 9th as this is the end of Quarter 1. All tests can be retaken too. If your child is failing please encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities. Hopefully you have been receiving my weekly e-mails. If you have not received my weekly updates, please e-mail me at mpeck@waynecsd.org. All class information can also be accessed by visiting https://sites.google.com/waynecsd.org/wcsdmath8. Thank you for all your support at home. I am very proud of the hard work and dedication I have seen in many students.
Living Environment Honors: In Living Environment we are studying Biochemistry. Specifically we are learning about the chemistry of the four main macromolecules that all life depend upon. We will also look specifically at enzymes and the role they play in living things. These molecules are the building blocks of cells and metabolism.
7th & 8th Grade Concert Information
As a reminder, students should wear white on top and black on the bottom. Girls may wear black pants or a black skirt (knee length or longer). Parents, please have your children try on their outfits ahead of time in case they had a growth spurt and it doesn't fit you still have some time to find something that works!
Congratulations to the following eighth grade students who were selected to participate in the Junior High Area All-State Chorus Concert on November 4th at Brighton High School. Wayne Central is proud and honored to have you represent our school!

German Cultural Immersion
We have 19 of Wayne Central students participating in the Rochester-area German Oktoberschulfest, cultural immersion day on Saturday, October 28th. Great numbers for our first year back in a while. It is hosted at the Spry Middle School again this year. Members of the American Association of German Teachers Rochester Chapter #39 have been making this neat event possible since 1991. A total of 176 beginning German students from area districts will be participating.
Event activities will include:
Students will be able to Examine German inventions and create their own; listen to and evaluate a variety of German songs through the years; find out about and taste Spaghettieis; Take part in German tales (many of them featured in Disney movies. Walt Disney was an American with German ancestry.); construct what is called a “Schultüte”; learn German folk dances and sample German foods provided by Swan’s Meat Market.
A big thank you to Mr. DeMass for helping make this possible!
8th Grade Health Class: Health Module
8th grade students need to successfully complete the 1st online Health Module by November 7th. The time commitment is approximately one hour. Students should watch each of the videos without fast forwarding (only a few are over 4 minutes long) and then complete any questions that appear at the end of the clip. Quiz scores for the module must average at least 65%. Students that do not meet this expectation will be asked stay after school to complete the assignment again. Completion of the 5 modules is mandatory - especially if the student plans to participate in the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC. A letter explaining the modules and due dates was sent home in September. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Mateo, Mr. Molisani, or Mrs. Kittleson.
