TIME TRAVEL
Tia Blodgett, Madison Badura
What Is Time?
People say time travel is nonsense and that it will never exist. However, some hundred years ago man said we would never fly, now we fly all over the world.
Theory Of Relativity
Einstein's theory of special relativity says that time slows down or speeds up depending on how fast you move relative to something else. Approaching the speed of light, a person inside a spaceship would age much slower than his twin at home.
Also, under Einstein's theory of relativity, gravity can bend time. For example, time dilation means astronauts are time travelers, as they return to Earth slightly younger than their identical twins that remain on the planet.
Infinite Cylinder
After spinning this up a few billion revolutions per minute, a spaceship nearby- following a very precise spiral around this cylinder- could get itself on a closed, time-like curve, according to the Anderson Institute.
However, in order for this to work, the cylinder would need to be infinitely long.
Paradoxes
A statement or proposition that leads to a conclusion that seems senseless, logically unacceptable, or self-contradictory
For example, if a time traveler traveled back in time and killed his grandmother, the time traveler would never be born. So the journey would couldn't have been made in the first place. But if the journey never occurred then the Grandmother never died which means that the time traveler was born and could make the journey and so on and so on...
Wormholes
Wormholes, if created, would collapse very quickly and would only be suitable for small particles. The technology needed to create wormholes is far beyond anything we have available today.
Black Holes
A black hole is a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape.
For example, if someone were to circle a black hole for 5 years, 10 years would pass elsewhere. When they got home, everyone else would have aged 10 years while the person who circled the black hole would only age 5.
However, in order for this to work they would have to travel at the speed of light.
Time Travel
To accomplish this, time machines often are thought to need an exotic form of matter with so-called "negative energy density". This matter has properties that move in the opposite direction of normal matter when pushed. This type of matter could exist, but it might be present only in quantities too small for the construction of a time machine.
