Unami United
October 2, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
As you can see by our many classroom spotlights, there is no shortage of enthusiasm in the students of Unami, as they are actively engaged in their learning, in and out of the classroom.
Our Advisory Program is going exceedingly well with teachers developing lessons that are designed to build team, community, and service. We will have our first extended advisory on October 13 as part of our Southside CB Hurricane Relief. See below for details.
7th grade Gneiss teachers, located in the modular classrooms, did a wonderful job of transitioning to temporary instructional settings during the remediation of the HVAC ductwork. While their classrooms are temporarily out of action, the learning has not been interrupted. We expect renovations to be complete early this week; however, students will not return to classrooms until air quality testing is fully completed.
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal
Tamanend and Unami Middle Schools are planning to engage both of our communities in a Walk for Relief during an extended advisory period on Friday, October 13. This walk has several functions. First, to raise money through student and staff sponsorship for Hurricane Relief; second, to focus on the benefits and experience the fun of walking for exercise, lastly to build our positive school community, united. We plan to conclude our walk with a group aerial photo. Our student council is engaged in building excitement and planning logistics. They are also including this service in our upcoming fall dance, collecting donations and selling baked goods for the cause.
To sponsor your student, go to My Payments Plus (www.mypaymentsplus.com) and find Unami Walk for Hurricane Relief. If you have trouble with My Payments Plus, please email Mrs. Susan Biebl. Again, all monies raised will be donated to the American Red Cross to support their Hurricane Relief efforts.
Imagine, if every student receives a $10 sponsorship, Unami and Tamanend together and united will raise more than $18,000 for this extremely worthy cause!
LINK LEADERS WANTED
8th & 9th Graders,
If you have already participated in L2U before, and you want to remain involved in this student advocacy program, click here to complete a Link Leader application. Link Leaders will assist in leading L2U Saturdays to promote community, energy and action at Unami! This is a great leadership opportunity, which can be documented for NJHS or NHS applications!
WHO WANTS TO BE LINKED IN UNITY?!
Throughout the year, and especially in Unami United Advisory, we support our students as they learn to find their voice and "stand up" for themselves and others. Once our students leave Unami and go on to CB South High School, building student advocacy is continued and broadened through a program called "First LINK." As a part of LINK's service outreach, those South students work with our Unami students to foster community building and servant leadership. We call this "Link to Unity" or L2U for short.
We will have our first L2U on Saturday, November 11th for all interested 8th and 9th graders who have not been linked before. To receive an invitation to L2U, students (or parents, guardians, teachers) need to fill out a quick nomination form. We will send invitations based on nominations in late October. That means we need nominations by October 20. Students who return the signed permission form first will be the ones who are admitted to L2U.
L2U starts at 8:30 and ends at 11 a.m. Being that it is an action and learning packed two-and-a half hours, students must commit to attending the entire session (no leaving early). Participation is free and student participants get a L2U t-shirt at the end.
INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
Students in Miss Mangold’s Social Studies classes practiced vocab words by creating a visual representation of imperialism using WikkiStix. They came up with creative symbols for other ideas like protectorate, dollar diplomacy, annexation, and spheres of influence!
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY....DEVELOPING DIGITIAL AND RESEARCH SKILLS
TEAM GRANITE SPOTLIGHT!
TEAM GNEISS SPOTLIGHT...
Ms. Caldwell and Ms Cohick made popcorn three different ways with their 7th grade students to review the 3 types of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation.
In Mrs. Caldwell’s 7th grade Science class, students investigated how heat is transferred until thermal equilibrium is reached by completing a lab using hot and cold water and temperature probes. The students created a data table and graph of their results and then drew a conclusion to complete a full lab report using the scientific method.
In Ms. Penn's ELA classes, students are enjoying writing, narrowing ideas to find focus in their writing, sharing and receiving feedback, and learning about craft elements of memoir to improve their own writing.
TECHNOLOGY CLASSES ARE NOW IN FULL SWING...

Thank You for Your Magazine Drive Efforts!
The fundraising portion of our Magazine Drive came to and end on Friday, September 29. Although inventory of items sold and funds raised is not quite finished, returns thus far indicated that Unami had another successful Magazine Drive fundraiser. The money raised is used to benefit our students directly - everything from classroom items to extracurricular items to amenities in the school that help students each day (e.g. our filtered water fountains). We will find out in the coming weeks whether Unami achieved the highest percentage of overall student body sales among the 5 CB middle schools, which would allow us to recapture the Giant (this time Turquoise) Bling Duck!
We would like to offer a special thank you to Unami parents who volunteered to help us with the counting, sorting, and collections. You Rock!
With the fundraising portion of the drive concluded, it is on to the fun. This includes:
- "Duck feeding" through October 6, so students should have their ducks handy to show
- October 19 "Magazine Disruption Day", involving the Bingo Prize Party and Eagles Experience Lincoln Financial Field Trip for those who qualified
Magazine orders should start to arrive at homes by the end of November. We will communicate a Cookie Dough pickup date as soon as we have one - stay tuned!
Thank you for all of your support!
We Need Your Help With Yearbook Photos All Year!

UNAMI ATHLETICS - INCLUDING 9TH GRADE SPORTS
Varsity Football:
Unami’s varsity football team defeated the Tohickon Eagles on Tuesday by a score of 8-0. A big gain by Jon F. and 2 long runs by Jayce C. set up a first and goal for Unami. Nick S. scored on a short burst and Matt B. scored the 2 point conversion. Unami played hard and the defense held Tohickon to zero points. A strong effort by the entire team let the warriors hold on to the lead for the entire second half. Great work warriors! We play Lenape at home on Monday; come out and support your 8th grade footballers.
7th Grade Field Hockey: Seventh grade field hockey played their first games this week! Our first game was filled with excitement and a lot of learning experiences as many of us are new to the sport. We were away at Tamanend on Monday which resulted in a tied game 0-0. On Wednesday, we played Tohickon and battled through the heat resulting in a 1-0 victory. We are working on our communication and team building skills and can’t wait to grow together as a team.
Boys' Soccer: The team had a great start to the year with one win and one tie. The team has a hard fought 2-2 tie with Tamanend with goals by Jaimie F. & Thijis P. Assists were made by Joey T. & Dean B. The team also had a 3-1 win against Tohickon on Wednesday. Jamin F. had two goals, Ben S. had one goal, and assists were made by Thijis P. & Aidan C.
8th Grade Soccer: The 8th grade soccer team got their season off to positive start, winning its first match 3 - 1 on Tuesday, September 26th against Richboro MS. Braedon K. netted two goals and Logan C. provided a goal and an assist to seal the team’s first victory. Logan C. continued his scoring streak on Thursday, Sept. 28th against New Hope MS with a curling, long distant shot, assisted by Kyle G. Unfortunately, the team came up just short, losing 2-1 to their cross-county opponents. Next week, they will look to improve upon their record, as they host Klinger MS on Tuesday, Oct. 3rd and Newtown MS on Thursday, Oct. 5th.
9th Grade Soccer: The 9th grade soccer team began their inaugural season this week with games against neighboring Tamanend and Tohickon Middle Schools. The team came up short in both games, resulting in 6-1 and 3-2 defeats, however the team continues to improve with each opportunity. Saidavan M. and Liam D. found the back of the net, and will look to add more goals and assists next week as they play Lenape MS @ home on Monday, October 2nd.
Girls' Tennis: Girls Tennis got their first victory on Wednesday versus Tohickon. Marissa P. won first singles in sets of 6-4 and 6-4.Anushka gattu won 2nd singles in sets of 6-0 and 7-5. Ellie P and Grace N. won first doubles. Great job girls!
9th Grade Girls' Soccer: The 9th grade girls soccer team started their season this week with a 1-0-1 record. On Wednesday, the team beat Tohickon 3-2 with two goals by Jade C. and one goal by Brynn O.
