Lydia Middleton Learning Commons
Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation
May 2016
It's hard to believe that the end of the school year is here! Students spent the entire month of May exploring Osmo, Sphero, Cubelets, LittleBits, Magnatiles, and more! We had a month-long celebration of electronics, robotics, magnetics, building, interacting, designing, perseverance, problem-solving, creativity, inventing and collaborating were all happening in the Learning Commons.

Makerspace Activities
A MakerSpace is a place where students can invent, create, tinker, and discover. Below are a few of the activities available in our Lydia Middleton Makerspace.

Cubelets
Cubelets are modular robots that are magnetic. To create a robot you need a think, sense and act cube.

Sphero
Play is a powerful teacher.
We create connected toys - but that's not all. By fusing technology with robotics, our toys are teaching and inspiring tomorrow's inventors and innovators. Programming isn't easy, but you don't need to be a rocket scientist to give kids a strong foundation. All you need is a Sphero.

Osmo
Osmo is a first of its kind play/learning system for the iPad. Osmo has a little device that projects the front facing camera down to your desktop. Using blocks, letter tiles and other objects you can interact with the apps that Osmo offers for free.

Magnatiles
Students working together to build with Magnatiles.
THANK YOU, ROLLING RETURNS!
A big thank you to our 5th grade Rolling Returns crew who have been so helpful in the Learning Commons! As members of Rolling Returns, students were required to remember which day of the week they were to work, visit each classroom to pick up library books students were ready to return, sort books and check them in.
Summer Reading
Research shows that children who do not read over the summer often suffer from "summer slide" or "brain drain." This means that it can take longer to catch up and get back in the swing of things when the new school year starts. Don't let this happen! READ, READ, READ this summer! Why not participate in the Jefferson County Public Library Summer Learning Challenge or the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.
About Us
Our goals are to:
- Get students excited about the library space and learning.
- Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
- Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically, and creatively.
Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
