The Mata Memo
January 26, 2021
Principal's Message
Dear Mata families,
What makes Mata Montessori great is the fact that our teachers and community believe in our students and will go the extra mile to ensure success for all learners regardless of if they are face to face or virtual. We understand that being smart is “something you can get” and not simply something with which you are born. It's important to us that we constantly remind our children of three crucial messages (Saphier, 2005):
1 “This is important.”
2 “You can do it.”
3 “I will not give up on you.”
It's important to have someone in your life who believes in you and consistently communicates to you that you were an able, valuable person who could and would do great things? We understand that the messages our children receive at this time in their lives will have a long-term impact on them.
As parents and educators, we must directly teach our children how to manage time, how to focus themselves, how and where to go when they are stuck, how to use feedback, and how to reap the rewards associated with hard work and perseverance. These topics must be interwoven into everything we expect our children to master at home and at school.
If we consistently send these messages to children regarding our belief in effort-based ability, our children—even those most at risk—will begin to believe in themselves and become motivated. Why? Because someone cares about them…someone wants them to succeed…they know what to work on in order to do well…they know what good work looks like…they know how to exert effort…they believe it would be worthwhile to do well…and they believe they are able to do well.
I charge each of us (parents and educators)to a noble calling: to be an inspiration, pushing our children to levels of attainment even he or she is uncertain is reachable at this stage of life. Remind them that…you can do it and will not give up on you!
We are so happy to collaborate with you on educating your children.
Please have a wonderful week!

3rd Grade Middle of the Year MAP Testing!
On Thursday, February 4th we will administer the middle of the year MAP test in reading and math to our 3rd-grade students. NWEA MAP Growth provides teachers with accurate and actionable evidence to help target instruction for each student or group of students.
Distance learning students can come to campus for the administration of the MOY assessment. To allow for physical distancing, students will test in the new wing of the building in one of the large science lab classrooms. Testing will begin at 8:30 a.m. and students will contact their parents upon completion of testing to be picked up from campus.
Distance learning students who are unable to participate in on-campus setting will assess remotely.
Please take a moment to complete the Google form sent by your child’s teacher so that we may plan accordingly.
Have a child that wants to come to Mata next school year?
If you have a sibling, you must complete the application prior to January 31st. Please reach out to Ms. Leija or Ms. Sosa for more information!
