Internet Safety and Protecting your Child
Below is a letter from Supt Hagenbuch that we are sharing on facebook and the school website to talk in more detail regarding how to keep your child safe on the internet along with a link to the New York State website with some great resources of how to talk to your child about internet safety and know what they are doing when on line. There is also a video from this webpage to watch for parents as a resource too.
In particular, the most important thing is to talk to your child. Ask them what they are doing online and supervise what they are watching and interacting with. Almost every device has "parental controls" -use them- and set strict limits that are shared with your child and unbreakable. Let your child be part of the conversation and let him/her know why. Technology is a great thing, but it also needs to be limited a lot for young children, more and more research is starting to show that extended lengths of screen time for young children can negatively affect brain development, social, and emotional learning.
Please use the following links and videos as a resource to help your family decide how to approach internet safety and the use of technology in your home.
Boys on the Right Track!
Boys on the Right Track for Boys is a program for boys ages 8-13 years old who would benefit from team building, self esteem support and exercise. Boys on The Right Track is a nine-week program appropriate for boys ages 8-13 and of varying physical abilities. Boys will make new friends, learn through fun games/activities and of course, enjoy running. This is a non-competitive wellness program with a curriculum built to instill leadership, improve life skills and empower boys to practice emotionally and physically healthy behaviors while training them for a 5k. Some insurance companies may even reimburse for the program - call them and inquire if they cover. Financial Aid may also be available for those that need it.
Please reach out to Mrs. Jackson if you have any questions or call the number at the bottom of the flyer, the founder, Juliet Meade is a wonderful help. We do not want finances to be a reason a child cannot participate, there is aide available.
PreK Information Night -Thursday, March 21st, 6 PM
Reporting Absences- Excused vs. Unexcused
If you child is going to be absent, please remember to call the school to report the reason for the absence. Also, let us know if there is anything happening that we can help with to help prevent your child from missing school!
Based on New York State Dept. of Education and our Board of Education Policy on attendance, the following procedures are in place here at CS:
- An automated phone call, text, or email is sent around 10:00 am daily to notify parents of unexcused or unreported absences. If you have already reported the absence, you will not receive that call. This notification is a reminder to call the school to report the reason for your child's absence.
- Attendance and Tardy letters get sent home to inform you when your child is absent or tardy. These are sent after every 5 absences or tardies.
- If you child is absent for more than 6 consecutive days, they must present a note from the physician upon return to state that they are able to return to school.
- If a child is absent more than 10% of the school year, they are considered chronically absent. Based on research, this puts the child at risk for academic and/or social emotional difficulty at school.
Below are the definitions of excused vs. unexcused absences as they are defined in the Campbell Savona Board of Education Policy:
Excused: Any absence, tardiness, or early departure for which the pupil has a valid school approved excuse. (e.g. personal illness, illness or death in the family, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics or other medical visits, approved college visits, military obligations, absences approved in advance by the Principal, and other reasons as may be approved by the Commissioner of Education, including, but not limited to, absences due to circumstances related to homelessness.) School sponsored activities are also excused absences (field trip, assembly, music lesson, etc.)
Unexcused: Any absence, tardiness or early departure for which the pupil has no valid school approved excuse. (e.g. shopping trips, family vacation, oversleeping, skipping class, hunting, babysitting, hair appointment, and any other absence that is not excused.)
