What We Are Learning
Math
Adding & Subtracting Fractions
We are beginning our 3rd math module. In Module 3, students’ understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions extends from earlier work with fraction equivalence and decimals. This module marks a significant shift away from the elementary grades’ centrality of base ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra.

Language Arts
This week in language arts the students learned all about the Navajo code talkers from WWII. We read a historical fiction piece, a nonfiction article, and analyzed primary documents to get a better understanding of who these men were and what great things they did for our nation.
Social Studies
This week we learned all about the lost colony of Roanoke. The students studied primary and secondary documents to come up with their own conclusions about what happened to the missing colonists.
Writing
The students began to brainstorm their ideas for their first informational piece. Each student will write a non-fiction article about something that they feel that they are an expert on. Ask your student what he/she is writing about!

Astro Camp
I want to thank all of you who SO generously offered to help with our Astro Camp deficit. I was blown away by the outpouring of concern and generosity.
We are so lucky that we have some moms on PTA who spoke out at the meeting this week. The PTA is donating a good amount to the 5th grade!
We are meeting as a grade level on Tuesday, so at that time I will be able to let you know exactly what have and what exactly we will need.
Thank you again! What an amazing community we have here at Skyline.
