January 2021

Welcome to the New Year!

As we welcome 2021, I am sure most of you are with me in that we are happy to put 2020 behind. It was a challenging for everyone but I continue to be extremely proud of the work that we have done TOGETHER since our closure in March. It certainly seems like decades ago!

There is a lot going on this month with 2nd/3rd grades transitioning back on January 12th and then 4th/5th grades transitioning back on January 26th. Our instructional set up for all grades levels is highly contingent on you as parents....as your choices change, our plans may have to change which include teacher changes. Please make sure you are completing the 3rd quarter attendance information through ParentVUE that was sent out earlier this week by PWCS.

I wanted to assure you that our mitigation strategies at HMES are diligent, specific, and carefully implemented. Myself, Mrs. Mills, and Mrs. King are meeting with teaches before returning to review those mitigation strategies, as well as protocols for safety specific to HMES, tech needs, teaching needs, and more.

Health Reminders

Please let your teacher and/or the school nurse know immediately if your child has been exposed to someone who is positive for COVID-19. If your child is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with Covid-19, they will need to remain at home in quarantine. You will need to work closely with the nurse to determine when it is safe for your child to return to school.

If a member of your family is suspected of having COVID-19 and is being tested for COVID, please let us know as well. Finally, as a reminder, if your child is having any symptoms of illness, please keep them home from school.

All this goes for whether your child is a virtual only student or an in person student. We are working closely with the Prince William Health Department and this information will help make important decisions for our entire community.

Encore - New Rotation and Times

Starting on Tuesday, January 12th, we will be going back to a 6 day rotation. This will mean a change in encore each day. Your child's teacher will be reaching out to you to share times, days, etc. The encore buttons in your teacher's Canvas page will let you know the Day # for each encore and the new time.

On January 26th when 4th and 5th return to Haymarket Elementary, times will change, but the rotation will stay the same.

School Hours/Learning Schedule Changes - January 26th

When we welcome back 4th and 5th grade students on January 26th and our school hours most likely change to include two "waves" of students coming in, our entire schedule will have to change to accommodate this change. Scheduling changes will include:

  1. Encore times (again, rotation that starts on January 12th will stay the same)
  2. Whole group Zoom times (due to changing school hours)
  3. Lunch/recess times
  4. Small group times
  5. Special service times
  6. Basically everything!

As soon we get the information together after some last pieces are shared with us regarding transportation schedules, food service schedules, etc. we will be sharing with you all!

Technology Devices and Your Child

Many of you have had the benefit of using a PWCS owned device. Not all students will have to take PWCS computers back and forth each day and we DO NOT want students to bring in personally owned devices. Here is a quick rundown:

K-3: do not bring PWCS owned devices back and forth...we have enough at this time so students can still have access here at school without bringing them back and forth.

4-5: these students will need to bring their PWCS owned devices back and forth each day so asynchronous work can be done. We will have case to put them in. If a student is not currently using a PWCS device, one will be available here at school to use each day!

Circle Time at Home

Using circle time routines helps children’s learning, memory and knowledge—so they can use their new skills in the real world! Below is a link specific to PreK and K, but the website offers a lot of useful information for parents to help their child with continued learning.

Field Trip Money from 2019-2020

We have had a couple questions about field trip money that was submitted last year that wasn't used due to our closing on March 13th. This type of money follows the students so it is still available for use for your child this year. We continue to research meaningful virtual field trips for this school year. This money can be refunded if you would like. Please email our wonderful bookkeeper, Maria Pastor at pastorme@pwcs.edu if you would like a refund. Please note that refunds may require payments for virtual field trips that occur this year.

Counselor's Corner

Hello Haymarket Cubs! Happy January and welcome to a New Year! Let’s make 2021 the best one yet! Your school counselors Mrs. Schenck (hudspern@pwcs.edu) and Ms. Scott (scottkm@pwcs.edu) are always happy to talk with you!

We would like to recognize Mrs. Vaneman at this time for her hard work as a school counselor at Haymarket Elementary! Enjoy your retirement and we will miss you! There is going to be a Car Parade as a send-off for Mrs. Vaneman on January 22nd, 2021. Families may send cards and share special memories to the school. As Spring comes, make sure to check out the Haymarket garden and the special tribute there for Mrs. Vaneman.

A BIG thanks you to all who contributed to the Caring Cubs Holiday Program! Your kindness is very much appreciated.

Also, a huge shout out to everyone who participated in Niko’s Drive-by celebration for his birthday and end of treatments. Congratulations Niko!

At this time, take a moment to think of all the lessons we have shared with you and all you have learned!
