🛠️ Gleb Samoshuk '23 Wins Regional Skills USA Competition for Carpentry 🛠️
Senior Gleb Samoshuk represented his Clinton Warriors family and BOCES CTE program well at the regional Skills USA competition in Morrisville. As a competitor in the carpentry category, Gleb was provided a blueprint with partial measurements to build the piece pictured above. While competitors had the option to work in a team or as an individual, Gleb worked independently and won the category, with careful attention to small details, cuts, and alignment.
In the Skills competition, he indicated the biggest challenge was the inability to prepare for an unknown challenge; however, he used quick thinking and problem solving skills to complete the task. Through this experience he learned to look at the details and not to overlook or ignore anything. When asked for advice to fellow students he provided the following: "Be determined. Keep doing what you want to do. Always try to meet your goals and don't let anything stop you."
Gleb has been interested in building things since he was small and recalls receiving a hammer from his grandfather at the age of three as early inspiration. He is currently enrolled in the BOCES Construction Trades program and plans to attend Utica University in the fall for construction management. He hopes to keep competing and will represent BOCES and CCS at the state competition in Syracuse this April.

📝 ATTN: Writers- The Helen & Leon Sperling Holocaust Education Essay Content 📝
January 27th of this year marked the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the most infamous of the Nazi concentration camps established during the Holocaust. For over forty years, Helen Sperling, a well-known member of our local community, spoke at many of the schools in our area about her personal experiences in that dark chapter from our human history. Helen taught thousands of students the important lessons to be learned from the Holocaust, urging her young audience members not to countenance evil or stand by indifferently when they saw others being treated with inhumanity. In an effort to keep Helen’s memory alive and to help carry on her vital work, the Helen and Leon Sperling Holocaust Memorial Committee would like to invite students to take part in an essay contest. Cash awards will be given for the first ($72), second ($54), and third place ($36) entries in two age groups, grades 6-8 and 9-12. In keeping with Jewish tradition, the cash prizes will be in increments of 18, the number representing the Hebrew word chai, which stands for “life, alive, or living.”
Essay Details:
The lessons of history are many. Among the most important is the way that events of the past teach us how to better view the present and to react with understanding, foresight, and courage.
Choose one of these topics for your essay:
- How do events of the Holocaust have meaning in our current time of increasing anti-Semitic events occurring in the United States?
- How has your personal life been affected by the study of the Holocaust?
If you are interested in entering this essay contest, please see your ELA teacher or Mrs. Johnson for details on how to enter!

Positivity Project Mindset of the Week: Love of Learning
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.
Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.
Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.
