April 2022
April is School Library Month
April has to be one of my favorite months all year for so many reasons! I love all the new flowers and blooms that seem to appear every day! Though my allergies don't like it so much! Tulips have to be one of my favorite flowers. I took the picture on the right down in Williamsburg Virginia. I wish I could group tulips like this! All I seem to grow are tulip leaves!
The other reason I love April is because it is School Library Month and April 4th is School Librarian Day! These two events are rarely celebrated or mentioned by anyone who does not work in the School Library! But each year School Library Month and School Librarian Day always serve as a reminder how much I love my job and how I love trying to create and foster a love of reading in our Hollywood Herons. I LOVE the graphic below created by Capstone Publishing on The Power of the School Librarian! I also am reminded about how lucky we are to have a School Librarian at each of our school sites in this county. I work with such an incredible team. Even if you leave Hollywood, you are always going to have an outstanding resource in the School Library at any school site.
I would love to see pictures of our HES Herons reading! So in honor of School Library Month, send me pictures of our HES Herons reading, so that we can feature them in our next newsletter and on Twitter. Make sure you email the pictures to me (sjhazuda@smcps.org) and have the subject be "Caught Reading".
THANK YOU!!
We will be doing one more Book Fair in June. It will be a way for your and your children to stock up on new books for summer reading. This Book Fair will only last two days and it will be a BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE! So be on the lookout for more information towards the end of May.

Spring STEM Activities
Egg Drop
Gather any or all of the following materials:
- scrap paper/newspaper
- paper towels
- straws
- popsicle sticks
- tape
- glue
- carboard boxes
- plastic sandwich bags
- plastic containers (like plastic cups)
- balloons
- string
- tissues
- paper towel/toilet paper rolls
- eggs (must use material)
This can be a whole family event or even a competition between family members.
Each person or group will construct a device to protect an egg from cracking when it is dropped.
- First, take some time to create a design for the egg protector.
- Second, then use the supplies that have been gathered to make the egg protector.
- Third, test the egg protectors by either standing on a chair and dropping the egg or find another high place to test out the egg protector.
If anyone completes this activity, I would love to have pictures of the egg protectors and the testing of it!
