Sunrise Family Updates
10.20.23
Hi Sunrise Families!
Hi All - I hope this message finds you well. We look forward to seeing you at conferences next week. Please go to Bloomz to sign up for a time with your child's teacher. If none of the times work (or you have not signed up for Bloomz yet), please let your child's teacher know and we will do everything we can to find a time that works for you and the teacher. Your partnership is critical to your child's success; we want our students to know that we are on the same team, cheering them on!
When you are here for conferences, we will have our Scholastic Book Fair for you to visit on our lower level, many community partners in our cafeteria, and everything you are missing from home in our Lost and Found! Please visit all three stops! :)
Finally a reminder to communicate your child's after school plans with your child's teacher. Bloomz is the preferred method of communication for most teachers because it alerts them quickly.
Thank you for reading the updates below (there are many!) and have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Katie Smullen
Sunrise Principal
PTO Updates - Scholastic Book Fair is coming!!!
The Scholastic Book Fair is quickly approaching! We will have the book fair open during parent teacher conferences at BOTH Sunrise and Sawyer. We are in need of volunteers to help staff each book fair for the times possible! The book fair will be open at BOTH buildings during parent teacher conferences for families to visit. Students will NOT have the ability to SHOP the book fair independently during the school day or without parents.
Students are able to have an e-wallet that is available online during the fair and makes it easy for children and families to pay at the book fair. Any left over funds can be used online in a gift card format as well!
Sunrise families can sign up for e-wallet or even shop online at this site.
This is a sign up sheet for the book fair volunteering. Both schools are listed, and time slots are suggestions - if the time you sign up for is not “exact” please adjust as needed. If you can cover ANY of these shifts - please sign up! Someone from PTO will follow up with you prior to the book fair to make sure you are prepared.
Also - please work hard to turn in your fundraising BINGO for some great prizes and support our teachers! BINGO is due MONDAY, OCTOBER 23.

Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)
We know that digital access is so important to our students, and we wanted to make you aware of (and provide helpful tools for) the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). ACP can be used to help close the digital equity gap for students that qualify. With ACP, families can apply directly for a discount on home broadband service and receive up to a $30/month discount on their internet bill and a $75/month discount on tribal lands. This discount can be applied to their existing plan or another plan or service of their choosing.
In addition to providing discounted internet service, the ACP provides a one-time, up to $100 per household discount on a connected device, such as a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet with a participating provider.
Families can find out if they qualify by calling the ACP Support Center (877) 384-2575 or by visiting the dual language English/Spanish Wisconsin Public Service Commission ACP Benefit Page. In addition, EducationSuperHighway provides getacp.org, a pre-enrollment wizard that also helps find participating providers available at your address.
The FCC ACP Communication Toolkit contains promotional materials that can be downloaded and customized to meet your school district needs; including but not limited to newsletter blurbs, sample social media posts, backpack handouts, fliers, and posters.
In addition, schools can use the EducationSuperHighway ACP K-12 Toolkit to download letters and student ID templates that can be provided to households to help them qualify for ACP.
Families qualify for ACP without needing to recertify annually if they have a household member who is a recipient of Wisconsin FoodShare/SNAP, Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Tribal Head Start, SSI, and other federal programs.
Families that do not qualify through one of these programs can also qualify by having a child who qualifies for free or reduced meals, or who attends a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school. However, these qualification methods require annual recertification in the ACP program.
If interested in learning more, please consider attending one of the DPI information sessions. For further information please contact Rachel Schemelin at Rachel.Schemelin@dpi.wi.gov or (608)266-5190.

Halloween Costumes at Sunrise
Sunrise students are invited to wear a costume to school on Tuesday, October 31st. We want Halloween to be a fun day for everyone. If your child will be wearing a costume, you can help by making sure your child’s costume meets the following expectations:
The school dress code must be followed. Costumes cannot interfere with student learning and activities.
All costume preparations are to be completed at home, including:
The costume should be put on at home.
Applying make-up or colored hairspray should also be done at home.
Costumes cannot depict violence or violent characters.
Look-alike weapons are not allowed, nor any object that could be considered dangerous.
Masks that cover a student's entire face are not allowed.
Costumes cannot be culturally insensitive, including perpetuating racial, cultural and/or gender stereotypes.
Costumes cannot promote the use of illegal substances or activities, or be derogatory or disrespectful.
Students are discouraged from wearing expensive or irreplaceable costumes.
Students will be asked to change out of their costume if it is not appropriate for school or does not follow the guidelines.
Thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Katie Smullen

The 3rd Graders enjoyed a tea party to celebrate the end of their first unit in CKLA (our new Reading Curriculum). Alice in Wonderland was one of the classic tales they had read in this unit.
