We have been collaborating with parents, students and staff to reflect how we can ensure our school is a place where students are valued, respected and loved for who they are.
This section of our newsletter will highlight actions that connect to this goal. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue dialoguing with all stakeholder groups to move forward with responsive action.
Feature: Meeting Author Lesa Cline-Ransom
In our final Family Book Club Meeting featuring, "Finding Langston." our students and families met the author, Lesa Cline-Ransom, in person via Skype. Ms. Cline-Ransom shared perspectives from background that inspired the book. She shared the historical and experential excerpts of her research from the Great Migration and racial segregation. These influenced her storyteling blending fact and fiction.
Ms. Cline-Ransome also answered questions from our students and gave us permission to video her responses so that our entire community can feel a part of it. Look for these videos to be uploaded on a special section of our website by May 1st. You will want to read "Finding Langston" yourself and the sequel Ms. Cline-Ransom revealed is soon to be released!
Thank you to Ms Griffin, Ms. Hewitt, and Mrs. Richmond for facilitating our three book club sessions and for connecting us to Ms. Cline-Ransom! Thank you to Dr. Jones and Mrs. Martinec for supporting the sessions. Thank you to our PTA for making the connection with our author possible!
COMING SOON: Our 2019 Parent Consideration Card
As the end of this school year approaches, we are beginning to look toward the next school year. We focus on sharing information and what we’ve learned about our students in order to promote continuous progress.
We will be sending home special blue copies of a Consideration Card for you to use. We will also be offering reminders, with a blank form attached, via HCPSS Messenger to help us have a larger return.
This Consideration Card is for you, as parents, to relate specific student information or observations about your child that you feel would be beneficial as our teachers meet to determine next year’s placements. For example:
- “My child seems to work much better in a classroom space with opportunity for movement and with a teacher who has a structured routine.”
- “My child is shy and often knows the answer, but is afraid to raise his/her hand and would work best with a teacher who gently encourages participation.”
It is helpful to focus on your child’s learning characteristics. Your feedback as a parent is valuable. There are certain concerns that we cannot consider as part of this Consideration Form: therefore, we ask that you NOT use the form to propose the following:
- Do not request or ask not to have specific teachers.
- Do not request grouping based on siblings’ experiences
- Do not request grouping with friends
- Do not request grouping based on hearsay
Your child’s current and future teachers will read your Parent Consideration Card. We consider what you share as valuable information to get to know them as learners, as well as, input for their future instructional groups.
Last year we reached the milestone of 40% of our families returning a Parent Consideration Form for their child(ren). This year we reach for 50% and thank you ahead of time for taking the time to share your input!

PRIZE WINNERS
EMERGENCY DRILL Practiced on April 12th
On Friday, April 12th at approximately 2:40, our students participated in a Shelter-in-Place Emergency Drill. The drill lasted about ten minutes and students were made aware it was a practice. They did a great job!
Shelter-in-Place is used when there is a danger of hazardous materials or a severe weather event. This drill began with students remaining where they were. They then practiced Duck, Cover and Hold On in that area. When the direction was given to respond to a severe weather threat, everyone moved to secure walls on the first floor where they again practiced Duck, Cover and Hold On. Teachers are with them and assist them to remain in place until the all clear notice is given.
The Shelter-in-Place Drill also gave the staff the opportunity to identify areas of improvement in our Emergency Plan. Our goal as a school is to help provide guidance and a level of comfort so our students can be prepared for any possible emergency.
We are required to hold 14 drills throughout the school year. Five are evacuation drills (fire drills) and nine are other emergency response drills. We hope you take the time to discuss this with your child. Thank you for your continued support so we can be prepared for any situation!
