Notes from the NURSE

Keeping our Students Healthy

You may have recently heard news reports about increases of illness including allergies this spring, as is typical with this time of year. In SMSD, we have begun to see increases in absence due to illness; with a few physician diagnosed illnesses and many generalized symptoms.

One of the most important things to help decrease the spread of illness is for those who are not feeling well to stay home. If your child has a temperature of over 100.0 or has vomited or has had diarrhea, they must stay home. Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.

Your child may also be ill, but without these symptoms. They may have a sore throat, headache, cough, or generally not feel well. If you suspect illness, please keep your child home. If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child’s doctor.

Weekly Schedule Reminders....

Please always check the school calendar for the most up to date schedule SMN Calendar

SMN Athletics & Activities

Athletic Update

The boys Swim and Dive team competed at State 6A Championships over the weekend, and once again, had a very successful record breaking meet! The Bison placed 7th overall as a team, placed two relays in the top 8, the other relay in the top 16, and also had 4 top 8 individual finishes and another top 16 finish. The 118 points that North scored as a team are an all-time high for North’s boys swim and dive team. What an accomplishment for these guys. This also marks the 5th year in a row that North has placed in the Top 10 at State as a team.

We also broke a number of school records in the process. The 200 Medley Relay of Jonathan Guild, Junior Lopez, Charlie Brooks and Zak Kohoutek finished 6th to grab State medals, and broke the school record with a time of 1:39.32! The same 4 boys also broke the school record in the 400 Free Relay, also medaling in 6th place, and lowered the record to 3:19.12.

Sophomore Jonathan Guild also competed in the finals in the 100 Backstroke, and came out with a 7th place medal as well as lowering his school record twice, finishing with a time of 55.17. Sophomore Zak Kohoutek had a fantastic meet as well. He placed 6th in the 50 Free with a 22.20 to earn a state individual medal, and he also placed 11th in the 100 Freestyle to grab points for North. The biggest contributor for North was senior Junior Lopez, who had an amazing meet, breaking 4 school records individually and with the relays. He finished 2nd overall in the 200 Freestyle with a new school record of 1:44.12. He then placed 3rd in the 100 Free, and lowered his own school record with a :47.83. Junior was also named to the Kansas 6A 1st-Team All-State Selection!! This compliments his 2nd team All-State honors from last season.

The Bison will return all 4 State divers as well as many of our swimmers from our State Team, so the future remains bright for Bison Swim and Dive.

The Lady Bison basketball team came up short on Tuesday against Olathe Northwest. The Ravens pulled away from North in the second half to secure the 48-29 victory. The Bison are back in action Friday at home vs Shawnee Mission Northwest. Varsity tips off at 5:15pm.

Lady Bison came up short Friday night against Shawnee Mission Northwest. The Bison were led by Seniors Baylee Doolin (17pts) and Jessica Brown (10pts). The Bison are back in action Tuesday February 21st vs Lawrence for senior night! Varsity tips off at 6:00pm.

A slow start dooms the Bison vs SM Northwest. Senior Randall Boldridge led the Bison in scoring with 30 hitting 5 three pointers in the second half. Junior Aziz Jagne added 10 points and 7 rebounds. The North boys basketball team lost 57-80.

SMN Wrestling: Jack Taylor and Ke’Juan Blake both qualified for the 2023 Kansas State Championships to be held on Feb. 24th, and 25th in Park City, Kansas. Jack placed 4th at 190lbs. and Ke’Juan placed 3rd at 215lbs. Aniah Grady will compete in the wrestling championships on Wednesday and Thursday as well.

SMN Bowling: bowlers are competing today in the KSHSAA Bowling Championships today at Olathe East Lanes.

Please check the school calendar so you can continue to support students participating in our athletics and activities programs.

  • Voluntary Student Accident Insurance (Managed by K&K Insurance)
Our school district has selected the Student Insurance Plan from K&K Insurance Group to make reliable coverage available to parents. If you don’t have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expensive “gaps' ' caused by deductibles and copays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.
