Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!

I wanted to take a moment this week to give a shoutout to the sewers from the Creative Crew of the First Reformed Church who made the Safety Shades for FES! The Creative Crew is made up of 12 members who sew several different items for hospitals, the Pregnancy Center, the Victory Center and nursing homes around the area. A big THANK YOU goes out to Donna Vogel, Diane Housenga, Sue Housenga, Florence Shipma, and Brenda Medema! Also, a shoutout also goes to Paula Ensinger who is part of our FES school family as a librarian paraprofessional who connected our need with community members and handled all of the communication, ordering, and details.
The Safety Shades are crafted fabric materials that attach above the windows of classroom doors. In the event of a lockdown, these shades are able to cover the entire window to prevent anyone in the hallway from seeing into a classroom. As we continue to update our safety and security measures at FES, this was one area that needed to be addressed. I am very thankful to have such a wonderful, caring, and supportive community that continues to make Fulton Elementary School the Greatest Little Elementary in the Universe!

Be careful about what you say around children. They hear everything. Lately, much of what they overhear is about coronavirus. This can be alarming and scary for children. Be careful about allowing children to see too much of the news. The information shared with us in the news can be very alarming and cause a lot of worries for children. The best thing that we can do as adults is to stay calm. Children really just need to be reminded about how important it is to practice every day preventative actions, such as washing our hands and covering coughs and sneezes by coughing into our sleeves.

Guess Who?
Thank You Ottens Family!
Mystery Readers!
Mrs. Price’s class celebrated Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with “Mystery Reader’s” all week long! The kids loved guessing who our surprise guests were each day. They were treated to listening to some of their favorite Dr. Seuss books along with a special treat from each of them.
Thank you to all of our Mystery Reader’s: Officer Leitzen, Mrs. Kunau, Kylee Sweenie, Mrs. Huizenga, and Cari Bush! We loved having you all!
Thank You Meemic Foundation!
Mrs. Tegeler won a standing desk through the Meemic Foundation. Students are excited to have this as an option for where they can work. A big thank you to Danyelle Hatter from the Meemic Foundation!
Students at Fulton Elementary School now have access to some new sensory and fine motor tools. These include such things as fidget toys, a sensory swing, a calming cube, a sensory sock, a balance board, Theraputty, weighted blankets and vests, play doh, water beads, magnetic sand and a play tunnel. All of these items are designed to help students to be able to regulate and engage more productively in academic activities.
Junior Achievement
I am reaching out to ask for your help with volunteering or encouraging a friend or colleague to volunteer for our Junior Achievement Programming. I was contacted today by the Junior Achievement classroom coordinator letting me know that Fulton Elementary School has a huge need for volunteers to deliver the JA programming. JA provides all the necessary materials to lead a 30 to 45 minute lesson to students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade. The lessons focus on connecting education to careers and life after high school. I have volunteered for the past four years in the fifth grade classroom and found my experience meaningful and more importantly a lot of fun. The kids really enjoy the lessons. Currently we are in need of volunteers to cover 3 sections in fifth grade, 2 sections in fourth grade, 2 sections in third grade, 2 sections in second grade, 2 sections in first grade, and two sections in kindergarten. Please consider volunteering and helping us keep this great program in our classes. Teachers are on hand to assist and support the volunteers.
To volunteer contact Nora Shook via email at nora.shook@ja.org or call 563-845-0545. JA will provide you with a kit that contains all the necessary materials and supplies. JA and FES greatly appreciate helping the students.
Gratefully,
Darryl Hogue
Music Mania!
Music classes are celebrating Music in Our Schools Month with a contest from the U.S. Marine Corps- Sousa's March Mania! Each classroom has filled out a bracket picking which song they want to win. We are voting in music class, but the battles continue even on the weekends!
Some of our classroom favorites have their first battle this weekend! Saturday's battle is The White Rose vs The Purple Pageant, and Sunday is From Maine to Oregon vs Moorside March.
