March is Reading Month: Power Up with Reading!
Student Led Conferences- March 9, 2023
Our teachers are looking forward to meeting with some of you during our March Student-Led Conferences. Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 9th from 1:00-3:30 and from 4:30-7:30.
These conferences are by request only.
Classroom teachers will be sending out requests to individual parents if a conference is needed. If you do not receive a request, you have a chance to request one by reaching out to the teacher directly at the end of the week, or by using the links provided in next week's edition of this newsletter. Special Education and Title I Teachers will also be reaching out to families individually to schedule conferences as needed. Specials teachers will be available during designated conference times should you have questions or concerns. Students are encouraged to attend these conferences with their parent/ guardian, but it is not required.
Since only some of our students will have conferences, ALL of our students will be bringing home materials to hold student-led conferences with you at home.

Therapy Dog
Salk has been approved to have a therapy dog visit. Charlie, the English Creme Golden Retriever, will be visiting once a week starting in March. Not only is Charlie a certified therapy dog, but he is one of my family dogs and I am so excited he will be joining the Salk family. Studies have shown that therapy dogs have the ability to increase positive emotions, promote engagement in learning activities and positive attitudes toward learning, reduce negative behaviors, as well as encourage prosocial behaviors including acting as a social catalyst to facilitate social interactions with others.
Charlie is a certified therapy dog after completing his training and testing by The Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He has also earned the title of AKC Canine Good Citizen. I am also a certified therapy dog handler after completing my testing and observations by The Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. Charlie will be introduced in a positive manner and students will be instructed on how to interact with him. Parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Charlie is looking forward to visiting. He would like to thank the Salk PTO for donating some supplies for him be a part of Salk. More information about Charlie and our therapy dog program will be presented in future scoops. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Seahawks,
Anthony Birkmeier

Please Watch the Forecast
Weather is Michigan is crazy. We have seen some beautiful warm days followed by bitter cold days. Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students may need warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots on any given day as we start to transition to Spring.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10 degrees or warmer.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
