Sherwood Spirit
May 2019
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk...
Dear Parents and Guardians,
May is here, and we are headed down the home stretch of the school year. It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over, but we have plenty more to do.
This past month was a busy one. Our second and fifth grade buddies from Ms. Cummings' and Ms. Fazio's classes put on a great production of "Stone Soup" for the students and parents. The work ethic and leadership shown by the students in putting this production together was quite impressive, and they should all be commended for their hard work.
Our amazing Sherwood PTA also brought in the Earth Dome assembly. This assembly involved the students learning about our planet while circumnavigating a 30 foot high globe. They got to go inside the globe and learn about land forms, geography, seasons, and more. Check out the photos in our newsletter below.
This month we begin with a Family Fun Night. Please join us for the movie "The House With a Clock in its Walls" on Friday May 3rd at 6:30 pm. Flyers were sent home from the PTA with further information. Additionally, the PTA will be hosting its spring plant sale May 8-9.
On May 22, please join us at Barnes and Noble in Bay Shore for the annual Islip Book Fair. There will be performances from Islip High School music groups, and the elementary principals will all do read-alouds. I will be reading at 4:20. We hope to see you there.
This month we also have additional NYS assessments in math (grades 3-5) and science (grade 4). The math assessments will take place Wednesday and Thursday, May 1-2. Part I of the science assessment will take place on May 28-29.
Also, during the month of May, we will ask that students bring in used water bottles. We are participating in a program called "Bottles for the Brave" whose goal is to collect money and send care packages to our troops overseas. Anything you can send in to help is greatly appreciated.
Finally, due to no snow days being used, school will be closed May 23-24. We will be closed for Memorial Day on May 27.
I wish everyone a safe and productive month.
Warmest Regards,
Chad Walerstein

Immediately following the budget presentation, please join the Islip PTA’s at 8 pm for a Meet the Candidate Night for the upcoming Islip Board of Education elections.
We are in the process of beginning to plan many exciting events and programs for next year. There are many great opportunities to volunteer. Being involved is a wonderful and important way to support our children and Sherwood. We are also looking for volunteers to chair PTA committees such as Membership, Kid Stuff Coupon Books, Family Fun Night, PARP, Fall Fundraiser and more! Many hands make light work!
