Glenealy School Newsletter

27th March 2019

Message from Brenda

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,

Our Glenealy’s Got Talent (GGT) show last Friday was sensational! We were entertained by close to 30 different acts ranging from musical performances, dancing, jokes, magic, martial arts and gymnastics. Each student who performed individually or as a group, entertained us with their talent and showed confidence and great stage presence! Congratulations to all of the students involved. A huge thanks to Mrs Harding and Mrs Jakeway and to the other staff members and students who helped out with the organisation, stage management, technical aspects and specific help with acts. This made the event such a success! Thank you!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL Assemblies)

Monday morning SEL assemblies continue to have a major impact on wellbeing and behaviour in the school. Parents have remarked that these assemblies have created good conversations at home too.

This week we reinforced previous ideas about being grateful and showing kindness. We celebrated this by using the assembly to focus on action that is being taken by students to make a positive difference to their family, the community or to the world. It was impressive to see many of the initiatives that students are taken outside of school to make a difference and to show kindness to others. In the Newsletter you will find ways to help out too. Please support some of the initiatives by discussing the ideas with your children and deciding on ways to support one of the projects listed in the Newsletter.

Helping our sister ESF school ‘Jockey Club Sarah Roe’ (Special School)

Please see further down in the newsletter about the initiative which will take place on April 2nd. WEAR BLUE!

Kind regards

Wear Blue for Autism Awareness Day Tuesday 2nd April 2019

Did you know that April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day, and this is traditionally celebrated by wearing blue? Here at Glenealy, and throughout ESF, we want to join with others and ‘take action’ to help raise awareness.

In addition to this we also want to ‘take action’ to support ESF Jockey Club Sarah Roe School, who are trying to raise $1 million to purchase a new school bus that has wheelchair access.

We thought we could combine our support for both organisations by encouraging staff and pupils to wear blue on April 2nd for a minimum donation of $20. Wearing blue will contribute to raising awareness and the money raised will go directly to fund the bus.

Collections will be made on the playground and can be given to the class teacher as well.

Thank you for your support!

Old Uniform Collection

Dear Parents,

My name is Noa and I am in Year 6. My Exhibition group is working on "Sustainable Community" and we are looking into how to reuse clothes making eco-friendly fashion. We are collecting used (but clean) uniforms from all year groups at Glenealy School to donate to Crossroads Foundation.

Donations of old uniform for re-use and recycling can be dropped off at the PTA Uniform Shop/ or Year 6 on Friday 12th April at 8.15 am-8.30 am or Monday 29th April at 8.15 am-8.30 am.

Remember: You will not be able to use the old style uniforms after the end of June at school anymore.

Thank you to all families that recycled old school uniform. The PTA sent 16 large bags of recycled uniform to Crossroads Foundation at the end of last term, for use overseas. Click here for more information on the wonderful work this charity does. Glenealy is committed to responsible recycling and re-use of our old uniforms. We will be arranging further collections of old-style uniform later in the year.

Thank you.

Earth Hour

Please help us make a positive difference

Earth Hour 2019 - Saturday 30th March at 8.30 pm

We are planning to take action on Friday 29th March by asking the classes to power down for one hour and as well as encouraging the students at Glenealy to make a pledge on how they can spread the message and Connect2Earth to make a positive difference.

Earth hour have shared the following statement - “Healthy nature makes our life better by providing us with good food, clean air, and fresh water - but it is all under the threat of climate change and loss of biodiversity. This #EarthHour, join us on 30th March 2019 at 8:30 pm local time, to switch off and speak up why nature matters. #Connect2Earth”.

So please help us make a difference and Connect2Earth by taking action on this Saturday in your homes at 8.30 pm. Watch this video to see how you can be part of this important message. Make a stance, nature matters - Link

School Sports

The Race 2019

Last Saturday 23rd March, nearly 600 students participated in the Hong Kong Primary Schools Sports Association (HKPSSA) cross-country championships in Discovery Bay. Glenealy School was well represented by our team of 26 runners from Year 3 to Year 6. Competitors had to run distances of 1.6 km, 2.1 km and 3 km respectively around Discovery College and the surrounding area.

All of our students completed their designated distances and should be very proud of their efforts. Each one of them demonstrated great resiliency during what was a challenging course against a very competitive field of runners. It is not often that children are required to push their bodies close to it's limit but all students involved were working at a very high level of physical exertion.

Many thanks to all of the parents and carers who supported us throughout the event and to Mrs. Lavery for performing marshalling duties. A stand-out performance of the day was Sonny Oldfield's (3K) 1.6 km effort, finishing 6th out of a field of 60 runners and just 16 seconds behind the winner in a time of 8 minutes 3 seconds. We also had several other top-20 finishers in fields of 60-70 runners. Well done to all involved.
