Scarborough High School
December 2, 2022
Dear Students, Families, and Staff,
We are headed for the Winter Solstice on December 21. One of the nice things about the solstice is that we will have the shortest day of the year behind us and start moving toward longer days slowly but surely.
We are about five weeks away from MidTerm week, and two of those weeks are partial weeks! Students should be checking in with teachers and making sure they are caught up and ready for the end of the semester. With the 12-day vacation, it will come quickly!
Some important dates in December:
Friday, December 3: Winter season games begin, however, Girls Ice Hockey has already begun. They have an earlier start to the season. You can check out the game schedule by clicking here.
Wednesday, December 7: Student Meeting in the Auditorium with the Building Leadership Team during AEAST. Students are invited to attend with questions or comments for the Admin Team.
Wednesday, December 7: Parent Meeting via Zoom at 6:00 PM. An agenda and link will be shared on Monday, December 5.
Thursday, December 22, 2022 through Monday, January 2, 2023 - Vacation, No School
Tuesday, January 3, 2023: School resumes!

No Food Deliveries to SHS During School Hours
We have been experiencing food delivery services (such as DoorDash and GrubHub) leaving food at various doors to the school during our school day. Students are prepaying for orders and then slipping out of class to pick up the order left at a door. One particular day while the state was experiencing reports of active shooters in schools from Sanford north (this eventually was determined to be a hoax), a teacher came upon a Doordash delivery person trying to get in through Door 13 near our Learning Commons. This was certainly very alarming at the time.
Parents are certainly allowed to come to the Main Office and drop off deliveries for their students, but SHS is not accepting food deliveries from delivery services during the school day. Thank you for your cooperation with school safety.

Kiwanis Partnership
The Scarborough Kiwanis Club is pleased to partner with Scarborough Schools to collect adult socks, gloves/mittens, and hats for donation to Preble Street for distribution to persons experiencing homelessness. These clothing items can be used and in good condition or purchased new. Collection bins will be available at each school (at SHS they are in Admin I/Main Office) and clothing items can be donated by students, faculty, and staff between Monday, November 28 and Friday, December 16. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
SHS Welcomes Chippy's Cafe
Chippy’s cafe is a new venture started by the Social Life Skills Program and their Consumer Math class where they have created a small business for selling coffee and baked goods to staff. The goal is that this experience will help students learn about handling finances, managing cash flow, making budgets and setting goals, as well as learning employment skills. It is also a fun way to bring a little joy to the day. Deliveries are being made to staff in their AEAST location. Thank you to staff members helping them run this business!

Learning Commons Book Event
Local Portland Author Ed Crockett who is also a Maine State Representative, will be visiting SHS next week on December 8 and he will be discussing his book, “The Ghosts of Walter Crockett” with students and staff at this event. This is the second of four book events planned for our Learning Commons this year - one per quarter.
We hope that everyone has a wonderful end to 2022! Stay well and take good care. Enjoy the season and time with those you hold dear! If we don’t see you before - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
