Preparing for Change, the Unknown & Practicing Flexibility
We are all preparing for returning some students to the school building. This involves adjusting class-lists, changing schedules and start-times, modifying classroom set-up, and more. We do not know all of the answers yet, and changes may occur in the future. It can be hard to adjust to changes and accept unknowns, yet adjusting routines and practicing for the knowns and modeling flexibility for the unknowns can make the transition easier and smoother.
1) School start time and length of school day will change. School will begin starting at 7:55 am with breakfast, morning meeting, and overview of the day, regardless of if in the building or learning off-site. If your child is not already awake and ready for the day by 7:55 am, start adjusting their schedule mid-March to allow for enough time to wake up and get ready for the day when we return after spring break.
2) Students will be expected to wear a mask while at school. If not already used to wearing a mask for longer periods of time, please start practicing with your child(ren), gradually extending the amount of time to increase tolerance and comfort. The video read-aloud of Spot Wears A Mask may be helpful in learning more about mask wearing.
3) Classrooms, interactions, and activities may look different. Planning for social distancing, individual use of materials, and planning for students in-school and at-home means the classroom will look and function a little different. We're trying to put together visuals and videos of what to expect to help children know better what to expect. More to come.
4) Validate their feelings and model flexibility. Listen to what your children are saying about what they are excited about, worried about, sad for, and let them know their feelings are entirely okay to have.
