CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
September 20th, 2019
From the Assistant Director
Phoenix rise up! I hope this week's newsletter finds everyone doing well. It was another great week around the school as things begin to settle down from the early school year flurries of activity.
If you are having trouble reading this message in English - at the bottom of this newsletter you will find a button which will allow you to translate this into Korean or a different language.

This week we hosted not one, but two home volleyball matches! The girls continue their dominance over divisional opponents and the boys look to find their identity as a young team. It would be great to see more parents and students in the Phoenix Nest (the high school gym) supporting our students in the future. Please see the volleyball schedule below and come cheer us on! We also sent our Cross Country team to compete at SFS and they made us proud by running hard on a very hilly course!
This week our student body elected their grade representatives! We have an incredible student council this year who will be working to improve our community and ensure student voices are heard. I'm really looking forward to working with this group throughout the year.
Finally, I would like to call attention to our yearly school service trip! This is an incredible opportunity for our students to become global citizens and have important and meaningful life experiences. I have been every year we have run this program, and I can speak first hand about the positive impact this trip has had on the students who have decided to attend. Please sign up and join us!
All the best,
Jason Musselman
Assistant High School Director

Collective Approach To Discipline Change
Students and teachers got together at the start of the year to determine what the behaviors of an upstanding CDS student should be - the result is the attached RISE poster. These are the behaviors that we all agree will help us form a positive community.
For the past four weeks of school there has not been a single detention, as detentions have been replaced with learning and reflection opportunities. Students who misbehave by going against a RISE expectation will have a conversation with a teacher and then find ways of reconciling and fixing the harm they have caused to the community.
Congratulations to the entire school community for your hard work and dedication to making this school a better place!

We hope to continue to provide more hands on, engaging and real world opportunities to our students in the future!

Varsity Volleyball vs. ICSU
"The CDS varsity girls volleyball team hosted ICS-U in their second game of the regular season. After a strong warm-up, our girls came out on fire. Great communication and passing helped CDS establish themselves early as a tough team to beat. Thanks to a serving streak of 10 serves in a row by sophomore JiAh Choi, CDS won first set 25-5. The second and third sets were a little closer, but in the end, CDS proved to be the stronger team that day. Sophomore Jueun Lee led the way with 8 aces and 10 kills. Sophomore setter Ashley Shimida also had a strong afternoon as she recorded 4 aces, 1 kill and 12 assists.
The JV girls also had a chance to test their skills against the ICS-U JV team. All 3 sets were very close. Going into the third and final set, it was tied at one set each. Strong serving from Evy Park and Andrea Kim helped CDS win the final set.
"CDS hosted ICSU on Wednesday, Sept. 18 for their home opener. ICSU brought a strong offensive attack, which proved to be a continuous issue for the Phoenix’s defensive game. While Anton and Soonwon made a strong effort to do their part as middle blockers, ICSU’s hitters showed their skill in avoiding many blocks. Having missed only 6 serves the entire match, strong serving from Dalton kept us in the hunt, but in the end, there was just too much to overcome.
With new to Dalton setter Heemin Lee leading the offense, steady improvement is being made as the team learns each others’ likes and tendencies. CDS looks to avenge their loss at their next home match against KKFS on Friday, Sept. 20." - Coach Cheyenne Reed
CDS Cross Country @ SFS
"On Wednesday, September 18th, the CDS Cross Country team traveled to Seoul Foreign School to compete in the 2nd meet of the season. The weather turned out to be a beautiful day for running. However, the team would soon experience firsthand the great difficulty of the course. With what seemed like a never-ending battle of hills, the members of the team faced the challenge head on and put forth commendable efforts. The first race of the meet started with the varsity girls. Once again 10th grader Chaeyeon Kim put forth a strong performance leading the way for the CDS girls with an 11th place overall finish. Behind Chaeyeon was captain Hyunji Kim followed by 10th grader Linda Hwang who both put in respectable performances.
Following the girls varsity race came time for the boys varsity race. A few veteran members were missing from the lineup for this race, however, the newcomers did their best to fill their place. Leading the way for the CDS boys was 10th grader Yoonho Myoung followed by 9th grader Siyoon Kim who both put in admirable efforts. The fruits of everyone’s hard work and effort are starting to be displayed little by little as we head into the middle of the season. There will be little time for rest as the cross country team travels to Humphreys once again this coming Saturday. Go Phoenix!" - Coach Chris Martin

Mr. Matt Riniker Selected for NHD Scholarship
Mr. Riniker worked tirelessly last year to bring this global event to our school and hosted one of the must successful events our school has ever seen. It was attended by over 400 students and teachers from schools from across Korea and Taiwan. Working closely with Jasmine Kwon (Class of 2020), this year's event on February 22nd looks to be even bigger. We are so proud of what Mr. Riniker has been able to do for the school and the opportunities he has created for our students!

Parent Teacher Forum
Last year parent, student and teacher voices led to many changes at our school. Most notable of these are the daily schedule, discipline policies and an overhaul of our webpage. Your voice matters.
We really hope that our parents can take some time during their day to join us on October 3rd. We will review our norms and start brainstorming a list of items that require our communities attention.
TOGETHER we can make this a great place to learn and grow for our students/children! I look forward to working with you!
