Principal’s Message

Can you believe that we are already into our second month of school? As we press forward with instructional best practice, we are committed this year to building relationships with each and every student as the foundation of school success. In this purpose, we are driven by responding to what makes each student unique in order to support them. Therefore, as difference makers at CMS, we have placed an emphasis on authentic and relevant experiences for our students.

In our efforts to walk in excellence, CMS needs your support in a major component of school accreditation. As mentioned in previous communication, every day counts and has a significant impact on student success, along with school accreditation specific to chronic absenteeism. Please be mindful that everyday counts as a student is deemed chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of the school year. That means if a student misses two days a month for a school year, they are considered to be on the path to be chronically absent. The Virginia Department of Education uses chronic absenteeism as an indicator for school accreditation. Currently, CMS is at a level two (19% of our students are chronically absent), which means we are falling below meeting level one (15% or less) or meeting the standard.

I share this because this is our year to walk in excellence! At CMS, we believe in this wholeheartedly. So, we look forward in continuing to work for you and with you. Finally, we invite two-way communication as part of the process. Make sure you are taking advantage of the Principal’s Coffee Sessions and Sunset Snacks. Meeting dates are in the Mark Your Calendar section below.

Regards,

Darin A. Thompson

Student Attendance Protocols

3, 5, and 6 day Intervention and Supports

Please be advised that notification is sent home when a student has missed 3 unexcused days of school in effort to rectify the attendance record. At 5 days of unexcused absences, another notification is sent in an effort to receive excuse notes/correspondence to rectify the attendance record. At 6 days of unexcused absences, a meeting with the Student Attendance Support Team is requested in an effort to provide supports that may be needed and to rectify the attendance record.

Excused Absence Protocol

Excused absences beyond 10 days will require the Principal or designee to review, approve, or deny the excused absence.
