You may have noticed more color has been added to our campus! 3 peace poles were hand-painted and donated to us this summer. We are now proud participants in the worldwide Peace Pole Project. More than 200,000 peace poles currently exist in more than 180 countries. The first peace pole is believed to have been made in Japan in 1955 by Masahisa Goi who was greatly affected by the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Goi dedicated his life to spread the message "may peace prevail on earth." Peace poles with his message were erected all over Japan, and afterward in different languages in other countries. The Peace Pole Project began in 1985 after Goi's death and has become the most recognized international symbol of peace.
Penngrove Elementary now has 3 peace poles with the message "may peace prevail on earth" in a total of 12 different languages. Each side displays the flag of a country that speaks that language. These peace poles are dedicated to our children and stand for our promise to join the world's nations in a wish for peace. We start by teaching our children that peace comes from within. "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me."
Thank you Garcia Family!
