Spring Break

Spring Break begins Friday, April 3. I hope everyone enjoys a safe and relaxing time away from school. Hopefully everyone will come back on Monday, April 13 refreshed and ready for the final 7 week push to the end of the year!

Homework for next week

Your child will not have any new spelling words next week. I will also not be sending new book bags home until after break. It is still important to read nightly, but I would like to give your child some flexibility this week. I am asking that they work on telling time and math facts throughout the week. We will be making a clock that they can take home to work with. We will be focusing on telling time to the hour and half hour. I encourage you to give your child a time to the hour or half hour and have them show you that time on the clock. Then I would also show them the clock and have them tell you what time the clock reads. The standards state they need to be able to read both analog and digital clocks. Thank you for all you do to help your child in their education.

Maternity Leave

My doctor is still saying I am on track to have Baby Boy Yoder on April 29th. To help make this transition as smooth as it can be my last day with the students as of right now will be April 24th. My leave sub is an IA here at TCE, Courtney Cooper. She has been in and out of the room as much as she can with her current schedule. When she comes in she has worked with small groups of students and also worked with a few one on one. When she enters the room she just finds a group and starts interacting with them. She is very excited for this opportunity and I know that she will do great. She has a wonderful group of first grade teachers here to help her along the way as well. I will be sending my end of the year letter home shortly after spring break. It includes great ways to keep your child learning over the summer so that their transition into second grade is a smooth one.

Book Orders

April 15th the last day to order books from our recent book orders that came home this week. Feel free to send in a check with your child's book orders or you may use the link that I have attached below to order books from the book order as well. You may also click on the Book Order Link below to order online or go to www.scholastic.com and use our class code GPKTW. When you order online you are not limited to what is in the flyers. You can search their site for any books that they have available! I will only be sending one more book order out this year. I know that this order was sent home and is due back around the book fair. Sorry about that I was just trying to get them out to you and the final one back prior to the end of the year.

Monarch Butterfly Garden

We are still waiting on our milkweed seeds to be delivered. As soon as they are we will plant them so we can observe the changes that occur. We explored different kinds of soil (clay, sandy and garden) and decided which will be best for growing our seeds. You can visit the organization that we are getting the seeds from at the link below.

The Spring Book Fair is coming...

The Spring Book Fair is coming to TCE! It will be open Tuesday, April 14th – Friday, April 17th during the school days AND on Saturday, April 18th from 8:00-10:30 am during PTO’s Pancake Breakfast! Students may bring in money and purchase books during our class library time. Our class will shop the Book Fair on Tuesday, April 14th. If you choose to send in money for your child to shop, send it in a clearly marked envelope with your child’s name and teacher. You are welcome to sign in at the office and shop with your child as well. **You must have a background check on file in the office if you wish to shop during the school day with your child. You must also have completed the anti-bullying training by watching video from HSE’s website: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx.** You can also shop the Book Fair Online starting April 8th – 22nd! Just visit http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/thorpecreekelem. Thank you for supporting the library and reading in our school!

Recess

Warmer weather seems to be returning, however it is often still chilly at the time of day that we go out for recess. Please be sure to send a jacket or sweatshirt with your child as short sleeves alone can be very chilly at recess.

Things we are collecting...

There are several items that we are always collecting at school. Feel free to send them in whenever you need to.

  • all plastic bottle caps and lids for our buddy bench project
  • Boxtops
  • Campbells Labels for Education

Coming up next week....

Reading- We will be reading different fairy tale books as well as different versions of the same fairy tale. We will be comparing the characters in these books to see how they are alike and different.

Spelling - New spelling lists will be sent home the Monday after Spring Break. We will be doing a lot of review activities in class next week for the words that have already been covered this year.

Writing - We will finish working on our fiction writing for our Young Author books. We have been focusing on reading our story as the reader would not just as the writer. We will continue to talk about adjectives and how they help the reader to see a story the way the writer sees it.

Math - We will begin our unit on telling time. Students will be able to tell time to the hour and half hour on both analog and digital clocks. If you have an analog clock at home help you child to identify the hour and minute hands and observe how both hands move, just at different paces.

Science - We will begin discussing living vs. non-living things.
